The original Oculus devkit is a year old now, and it's been usurped by newer models, notably Crystal Cove. With supplies of the original devkit depleted, it's unsurprising that Oculus has announced plans for a second-generation devkit.

"DK2" features many of the improvements found in Crystal Cove, including a low-persistence, high-definition display and low-latency positional head tracking. While all content developed using DK2 will work with the consumer Rift planned for later this year, Oculus says that it isn't "identical," saying that the "overall experience still needs to improve before it's consumer-ready."

Like Crystal Cove, DK2 uses 1080p OLED displays for each eye. An external camera will also enable head-tracking. From a stats perspective, it sounds similar to PlayStation's Project Morpheus announced yesterday.

Pre-orders for the new headset are available today and cost $350. The devices are expected to ship in July. You can order here.
