I think even more than the other two in the series this is going to be a real love it or hate it game for many people. If mechanics matter more to you than story and you can get into difficult games designed by crazy people like Resonance of Fate you might truly enjoy this one, but if you need a story that is more than an excuse for people dressing up in various outlandish fashions or if you want a traditional JRPG you probably won't get much enjoyment from this. I personally am very into Lightning Returns but I can see it is not for everyone.
PS- If you do want a traditional Final Fantasy game with crystals, random encounters, and turn based battles you should check out Bravely Default. -
Steve, Well written review. I will add to things and say that this game is very challenging. I would suggest that people play through it on easy first to get the idea of things. When you fail a fight in this game you go into a ko state. If you don't have a raise item or EP then you must choose escape which means you lose in game time. On easy you are able to restart the battle and not be punished. It allows to experiment. The game is designed to be played multiple times.

Glad there are some positive reviews for this. I only got to play about 45 minutes yesterday but I like the other games in the series so we'll see how this is. I just really hope that Hope isn't the narrator for the entire game. I mean seriously, he is by far the most disliked character in this series, and they pick him...
