Happy Holidays from Shacknews

On behalf of the entire Shacknews team, I wanted to wish you a happy holiday.

On behalf of the entire Shacknews team, I wanted to wish you a happy holiday. We're going to be taking a few days off to spend time with friends and family, and play video games (to avoid aforementioned friends and family). During this time, we'll be catching up on our backlogs so that we can debate GOTY selections like the intelligent monkeys we are. (Make sure you let us know what we absolutely must consider!)

News updates will be relatively slow until the new year, unless Valve announces Half-Life 3. We'll probably come off our eggnog-induced stupor to write about that.

2013 was an exciting year for us, with us finally caving in to review scores and Metacritic. And after years, we finally have a not-terrible video player, hooray! Looking forward, 2014 looks to be one of the most exciting years in Shacknews history, and we'll have more on that front in time.

Thank you so much for being a continued part of the Shacknews family.

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

In Japan, where only 1% of the population is Christian, they still celebrate Christmas and say "Merry Christmas". Why aren't we in the west allowed to mention Christmas?

I'm an atheist myself but this PC bullshit really pisses me off. It's truly pathetic to throw away your own culture because you're terrified of offending somebody. Are you really that ashamed of yourself?

Well, the op could say Merry Festivus, Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, Yule, Anastasia of Sirmium, Malkh, Boxing Day, Kwanza, Saint Stephens, Hanukkah, Merry Christmas either secularly or religiously, etc., or they can just sum up all the holidays with one simple phrase and avoid forgetting anyone... something like Happy Holidays.

Culture is used as needed. Don't be scared by shifting needs baby.

Great straw man. It's not about being "ashamed", it's not about being "PC", it's about not being a needlessly exclusive, especially given the facts of how much of its traditions are straight up rip-offs from other religions' holy days and rituals.

See: The date of Christmas, the date of easter, the eating of bread as (proxy for) flesh of the savior/god, being born to a virgin mother, birth being marked by celestial signs, the story of the resurrection, etc. etc.

Maybe just have a bit of good will and sense of inclusion and just "happy holidays" rather than insist on merely the latest religious expression of such ideas being the valid one to mark in public in the west during this (as mentioned earlier, co-opted) period

cos it doesnt mean much there - most santas you see are girls in miniskirts instead of fat white dudes, and everyone ignores the day itself then goes to a love hotel, also no-one mentions jesus, like not even once.

English loan words in Japan often don't have the same meaning as their English counterparts. In this case, "Merry Christmas" (メリークリスマス)is the action of eating fried chicken and being tentacle raped in the afternoon.

"Happy holidays" can be a PC way to shy away from offenses. Or it can be how I use it: a catch-all to roll all the different terms for Christmas and other celebrations into one friendly greeting.

Be cool, man. Drink some milk, eat some toast, and be merry.
