Indie studio Hello Games, makers of the Joe Danger series, debuted a trailer during tonight's VGX for an upcoming sci-fi next-gen title called No Man's Sky.

The trailer showed exploration across the seas before jumping into a first-person cockpit view and flying to a skyward world filled with treacherous deserts and starship battles. The game will be procedurally-generated, allowing numerous players to participate in the same world. Specific platforms have not yet been revealed.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

OMG this is awesome, this is what I expected Star citizen to be @ 30+ million. Maybe that money should be moved else where. Wonder how many would pull there money out of SC and rather get this?

I know SC is a MMO but I rather play this personally, not sure if I am alone.

The bar has been raised all around I can feel it, 2014 is going to be the break threw year for many games in all areas.

I think the difference is that SC will be a detailed, balanced game. This will have more of a terraria/Starbound feel. New worlds et all, but nothing near the art detail we'll get in SC.

Yeah, I have zero interest in an MMO. Star Citizen might get me interested if it's genuinely good, but being an MMO is not a selling point. This No Man's Sky game looks fucking sweet.

That's by design. He mentions his influences and Chris Foss and a few others are listed. Those were also the ideas behind Homeworld. That and the old Terran Trade Authority books. Which I have and are awesome.

The more these video links make me watch trailers for 47 Ronin the less I want to see that movie (which is impressive because I didn't have much interest in the first place).

Just fucking disrespectful, is what it is.

The more fantastical creatures and magick I see in them, the ANGRIER I GET. This was a recent subject of the "Why Doesn't Axe Go See These Garbage Movies With Us" Club.
Reduced down, the final analysis is that if they'd entitled it "Keanu Fantasy Samurai Flick" rather than "47 Ronin", I'd be OK. But the "47 Ronin" WERE REAL FUCKING PEOPLE WHO DID NOT FIGHT OGRES OR FIRE SORCERESSES OR GIANT WOLVES (WTF, Really?). There's a degree of ACTUAL HISTORICAL AUTHENTICITY I expect from a movie of this title.

Be kinda like if Peter actually got to make that movie starring him (as James Woods) and David Spade, about being a window washer on 9/11.

Or if they made a Kennedy Assassination movie starring Mr. Hanky and Harry Potter (Hanky is thrown at Potter's head, which goes BACK and TO THE LEFT.)

Looks like an awesome game and is also very ugly. If you're going to rely on procedural art at least make a good lighting engine to help sell it. From a gameplay/exploration front it looks great!

Really? You watched that video and "very ugly" is the impression it left you with?!

Yeah pretty much. The ship/weapon/building designs are all very generic. The lighting is really flat. Also the trailer is straight up missing f/x (the giant worm thing doesn't even kick up sand) and the f/x that are there are bad (the gun firing, the asteroid damage, and the ships jumping to lightspeed.)

Don't get me wrong I think the game looks very interesting to play, but the visuals are definitely in the mediocre area. Some of the terrain looks decent. But hey that's just my opinion.

Looks interesting but hugely ambitious for such a small team. Even with randomization it seems like a huge challenge to create enough content on top of game design.

I don't understand all the love for this!!!??

there's a reason in every game studio there's a job exist called "designer". you just can't generate a buncha procedural randomness and expect to have gameplay from it!!!
