PlayStation 3 firmware 4.5 adds auto-downloads for all
The next PlayStation 3 firmware update (4.5) will allow all PSN users to set up auto-download functionality, unshackling it from Plus. It will also add Trophy privacy settings and easier transfers between PS3 and Vita systems.
Before the service started offering a substantial number of regularly rotating game downloads, the best perk of PlayStation Plus was probably the ability to turn on auto-downloads. It largely alleviated the common complaint of long wait times for game updates by doing it quietly while you slept. Sony is preparing to unshackle that ability from Plus, granting it to all PSN users with the next software update.
According to the European PlayStation.Blog, the update also includes privacy settings for your Trophies that will allow you to select which ones are visible, and the ability to transfer data between a PS3 and Vita using your wi-fi and ethernet connection. All in all, it sounds like a pretty handy update. The blog states the update will hit European countries this week, but firmware updates generally are made available globally.

Uh, wait a minute. Aren't we already on PS3 firmware 4.6? In any case, firmware 4.6 bricked my old PS3 and resulted in me having to get a new one, so I'll be waiting a week or so before I download this next update (whatever it's actually going to be called). It's nice though that everyone will be able to take advantage of it.
