PS4 will recognize PS3 game discs for cross-gen upgrades

Sony has provided a detailed walkthrough of how to upgrade your disc-based and digital purchases from PS3 to PS4 versions for $9.99. Games included in the promotion include Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs.

To ease the transition from this gen to the next, PlayStation 4 will let you upgrade select PS3 games to PS4 versions for a fee. Sony has outlined exactly how that will work, and apparently it means the PS4 can recognize PlayStation 3 discs to some extent.

In a detailed walkthrough of the digital upgrade system, Sony explains that there are two ways of going about your upgrade: disc-based and digital. Digital is the simpler route, since it's tied to your account and will automate much of the process. If you go the disc-based route, however, you'll need to input an included voucher code, and then download the game at a discount when it becomes available on PlayStation 4. But to keep you from simply having two copies of the game, you'll need to keep your PS3 disc in the PS4 to play it.

The selected games are Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, and Watch Dogs. Each can be upgraded for $9.99 for a limited time.

Would be nice if they do it for GTA V. But Watch Dogs will do too.

It says you can play the ps4 game if you pay up a fee and put the ps3 disc inside.

I thought that was cool ;(

        Way to skim a headline.

The entire article boils down to: Sony has posted instructions on how to use their next-gen upgrade promotion, and it includes a way to make sure you can't have multiple copies of the game.

Considering it's just like redeeming a code in the PSN store (and the instructions will be included in the game boxes too) it's hardly news.

It's news because we didn't know the details of how this would work until now.

So, I have some questions if someone could answer: Downloadable games on PS3, like Mortal Kombat, are they already playable on ps4 because of psn network? What games purchased digitally on a ps3 will work off the bat with the ps4? What are the best examples?

No PS3 games will work on PS4. Period.

(There may be some hope with Gaikai, but for now, no BC regardless of it being digital or Blu-ray.)

That's... really fucking clever. Get the PS3 version now, know that you can get the PS4 version in a few months for 10bux. Win win.
