Final Fantasy XIV resumes digital sales after stabilising servers

The developer and publisher was clearly surprised too, as in August it needed to suspend digital sales to let suffering servers rest. It's now content things are running nicely, and today resumed selling the MMORPG virtually as well as physically.

"The company has performed extensive server maintenance, increasing the number of servers for players worldwide, the capacity of players per World and the number of concurrent players," Squeenix said in today's announcement. "Following this maintenance access to the game is now functioning as originally intended."

After suspending sales on August 28, producer Naoki Yoshida commented, "Considering the outcome of our first launch, our sales estimates for this one were decidedly conservative."

How a company still sells the actual game of an mmo and then charges a monthly fee on top of that, is beyond me.

If I'm really into an MMO, I'd rather go subscription instead of microtransactions.

If you want to get the whole experience and sink some time into it, subs + box is usually the better deal. Plus, you get content that is not just there to further empty your pockets every 10 minutes.

There aren't many franchises left that can do it, but Final Fantasy is one of them. Bethesda seems to think that Elder Scrolls Online is as well; we'll see what their customers think.
