Homeworld: Shipbreakers announced, turns spiritual successor into official sequel

Homeworld "spiritual successor" is now becoming an official sequel thanks to Gearbox.

Given how much Gearbox wanted the Homeworld IP, it should be unsurprising that the studio would want to create a new game in the series. In addition to the HD remakes of the first two games, Gearbox will be making a new game called Homeworld: Shipbreakers, developed in conjunction with Blackbird Interactive.

If the name sounds familiar, that's because the game was formally known as Hardware: Shipbreakers, a spiritual successor to Homeworld made by many of the original's former developers. For fans, perhaps there can be no better news: the franchise has been reunited with its creators, and a new game that can officially don the Homeworld name is coming.

Prequel, technically, if the rumblings are to be believed.

That's what it always looked like to me. Them discovering the Hyperspace Core in the Khar-Toba in the desert.
Still that team might go on to make a sequel separate from the current game.

yeah if you read the pre-homeworld story it basically sounds like the different corps are set up to be just like the tribes in Homeworld, and its actually a little bit wonky because why would a spacefaring civilisation spend so much time scavenging one particular planet. But, with the tribes in place the premise makes perfect sense all of a sudden. I'm very excited :D

Gearbox is doing a good job keeping an "arm's length" transaction with the franchise so far.

As far as I know, Gearbox is not making the game Homeworld: Shipbreakers. They are also not developing it in conjunction with BI. They have lent the Homeworld brand name to BI, who have been working on their game for a while, and who are the people who created Homeworld. Gearbox is doing nothing other than lending the brand name.

The game has been in development under the name Hardware: Shipbreakers for a long time. Gearbox gets no credit for development, whatsoever: http://blackbirdinteractive.com/

Crediting as funding, not as developing making. I'm not developing or making Broken Age or Banner Saga, and many others, yet I added capital to them all.

They are also giving them money, which presumably means they will have some sort of control over how that money is used.

Given they have funding now i hope they drop the FTP idea and just make a proper game.

What little I know of Shipbreakers seemed like a ground warfare based RTS and procedurally generated maps for scavenging/research. I wonder if this means the scope is going to grow. I hope it doesn't dilute their original idea; I was really looking forward to it.

I came here to complain then I realized what the game was, it was that neat little rts. So yeah, if they want to turn that into homeworld, fine by me.
