PS4-Vita Remote Play promoted because 'people don't have four eyes'

One of the nifty features Sony showed off during yesterday's Gamescom conference was the ability to use Vita to play PS4 games. Using "Remote Play," someone could start a game on PS4 and then continue it on Vita. Although showcased with Assassin's Creed 4, it's a feature that's largely mandatory for every game on Sony's new console.

Wii U has the same ability to do off-TV play. But, Nintendo's focus has largely been on creating new gaming experiences with asymmetric dual-screen play. Microsoft's push for SmartGlass also has players keeping tabs on two screens. Sony says that's the wrong approach because "people don't have four eyes."

Speaking to CVG, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida discussed their experience with dual-screen gaming with LittleBigPlanet's Cross-Controller support. "It's kind of interesting, but you have to tell people when to watch the portable and watch the TV, but people don't have four eyes! So I think that's why we are focusing on Remote Play," he said. "I like playing console games in bed on Vita."

If you missed the presentation yesterday, here's a replay of Sony showing off how Remote Play will work on PS4 and Vita:

One thing I'd like to know is if they plan on allowing the reverse to occur as well--playing Vita games through a TV somehow, whether through a PS4 or otherwise.

That would be nice! Granted, I am one of THREE people that probably played PSP games on the TV.

I'm one of the other three then! Picked up a used PSP component cable for like $4 at GameStop of all places. MegaMan Powered Up holds up pretty well on the larger screen actually.

Honestly, one of the reasons I have hesitated on getting a Vita is because I was waiting for them to talk about or reveal the ability to play Vita games on a TV. That rumor of an HDMI-enabled Vita a few months back made me very hopeful.

I don't think so, they're calling it "Remote Play" for a reason and that is play when you're away from your console.

But I for one do wish for this feature, I loved that Gamecube attachment that allowed you to play GBA games on your TV.

This is one of the biggest selling points of the PS4 to me. Being able to play my games while my family uses the TV and I can be in the room with them? Sign me up

As a launch Vita owner who let the system sit for awhile after putting way too hours into Unit 13, I've come back to it in the last few months and have been playing through some of the backlog I have from PS Plus freebies. The system has matured a lot, interface changes have been great, and with RemotePlay baked into the PS4, it will be getting a ton of use for sure.

This is no news to anyone, Sony has always been awful at the software end of their consoles, it was so with the PS3 and PSP and I'm sure it will be so with the PS4.

You either get used to it or you don't.

The PS3 dashboard is pretty clean, much much cleaner than the 360 dashboard anyway.

it appears cleaner but it's too slow to get into the store and the settings are not organized well at all.

The store was an abortion the last time I saw it, I avoid it if at all possible.

But regular dashboard navigation is much much faster and more responsive than the 360. I don't even like turning my 360 on at this point because it's such a clusterfuck to get logged in and find what I'm looking for.

it's pretty bad dude. it's almost cable set top box interface or 1990's cell phone interface bad.

i don't get it. it seems like a basic touch screen mobile device UI. you're tapping icons to launch games and you can drag them around.

You're smoking something. It's nowhere near as bad as you're making it out to be.

Would I tighten up the graphics on level 2? Sure. Would I make it stop adding new icons to the very end of the 5 page long list? No doubt.

But I can turn it on, tap twice, and be in my game. That's all I demand of a GUI.

I really want to love the Vita. I really do. But the screen is too small to be considered useful for remote play. Playstation All-Stars on Vita, the characters are way too small to be enjoyable. I would buy a vita xl in a heartbeat, which in turn, would convince me to buy a ps4. I love off tv play on my wii u.

@Andrew: Asymmetric. Not Asynchronous. One refers to how you play, the other refers to when you play.

Sorry if it's been pointed out already.
