Dishonored director drops hints at studio's next title
Dishonored co-creative director Raphael Colantonio dropped some intriguing hints about the studio's next game, saying it will be "similar" to Dishonored, and that they're playing special attention to people's reaction to Daud in the DLC.
Arkane is being tight-lipped on the possibility of another Dishonored game. Even though it's now considered a franchise, the studio hasn't directly stated that another one is on the way. Whatever is in store, though, co-creative director Raphael Colantonio has dropped a few hints about what we might expect to see from its next project.
Asked if a future Dishonored game would feature a silent protagonist like Corvo, or a more talkative one like Daud from the DLC, Colantonio said they're in the process of figuring that out. "Both can work and be done well," he told Rock Paper Shotgun. "It's gonna be interesting. We're thinking about this very exact topic right now, though. It's at the heart of our discussions right now. Are we gonna go with a silent protagonist or not? Doing that with Daud was a way for us to test a little bit. See if people like it. So it will also depend on what we hear from players [after they finish Brigmore Witches]."
He shied away from saying that Arkane is working on another Dishonored title, but did say its next project will feel familiar. "I can't say exactly what we're working on yet, but I can say that it's definitely going to be a similar type of game," he said. "Choices, multiple objectives, branching paths, and things like that. Those are our core values and they will stay that way."
And while he didn't mention whether the next project is next-gen, he did mention a bit about how the studio views the upcoming generation. "The next generation is mostly going to be all about memory," He said. "That's gonna be the big difference for us, anyway. More memory means more entities, more density, more AI with more variations in their animations, bigger levels with less loading, etc. And also saving the state of things so that when you come back to an area, things are entirely [as they were]. Backtracking is actually embraced by the system as opposed to being a problem. It's all good things for us."
Finally, Colantonio also mentioned that the world of Dishonored was designed from the start to support more stories. "The lore is actually way bigger than the game itself," he said. "There are a few places we could go and explore given the opportunity. Definitely the islands around, but also all the big continents. Anything is possible."
