Players will start of as a rookie cop, doing the usual police things, then advancing up the ranks. Expect puzzles, driving, combat, and hopefully a heavy dose of correct procedure.
"Like the original Police Quest series, Precinct lets people see what it's really like to be a police officer," Jim Walls said in today's announcement. "With today's development tools and technology, I can finally deliver the type of experience that I've always wanted to. I want Precinct to rekindle the feeling of classic adventure games while delivering a cutting edge police adventure to a whole new generation of gamers."
The Kickstarter campaign is looking for $500k to bring Precinct to PC and Mac in Q3 2014. It'll be fleshed out and expanded if it passes that, and has an $800k stretch goal to make versions for iOS, Android, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 too. Pledging at least $30 will get you a copy of the finished game.
Former cop Walls designed the first three Police Quest games. The series stayed as adventure games for a while, spinning off into the SWAT series, but that ultimately became FPSs.
