Like PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold now offers subscribers free games. Last month, gamers were able to get Fable 3 gratis. What's on tap for this month?

While Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 were originally promised, it appears Microsoft has pivoted a bit with today's release. According to Major Nelson, today's free game is Defense Grid: The Awakening. Normally 800 Microsoft Points ($10), the game will be free until July 15th.

You can download the game from Xbox Live Marketplace. As of publishing, the Gold price reduction has yet to go in effect, however.

Fans seem disappointed by this week's offer, especially when the aforementioned games have yet to surface. OXM notes that Microsoft clearly promised AC2 and Halo 3 as free games this month. In response, Major Nelson tweeted: "I don't know what titles will be released when, but I'll let you know what they are when I find out."

      Sorry, I didn't mean to slight Defense Grid. It should be DG plus Halo 3 and AssCreed II though, not instead of.
      
      It's a pathetic selection compared to PS+, and Larry Hryb's insinuations on Twitter that we will be surprised by the Summer Sale and Games with Gold are a fucking joke.
      
      I wouldn't put it past them to offer discounts on certain games for the next two weeks, and after that put these games up on GwG.

        Pretty much. There is really no contest between the PSN+ free games and what Microsoft is giving away free with Gold. Microsoft free games pretty much so far have been Crash Course 1/2, Happy Wars, Fable 3, Wreckateer, Defense Grid.
