Metal Gear Solid 5 to have fewer cutscenes
Hideo Kojima says that Metal Gear Solid 5 will have "less cutscenes" due to the open-world environment. He compared the other games to movies, and this one to episodes of a TV show.
The Metal Gear Solid series has gained a well-deserved reputation for cutscenes the size of feature-length films. But since Metal Gear Solid 5 is moving into an open-world format, series creator Hideo Kojima says non-interactive cutscenes will be less frequent.
"I'm sure you're worried about if the cutscenes are as long as Metal Gear Solid 4," Kojima said during an E3 roundtable, reported by IGN. He said it will have "less cutscenes [than before]" due to the open world environment. Exploring the world means less instances of control being taken from the player.
"If you think of Metal Gear Solids 1-4 as movies," Kojima said, "[The Phantom Pain] is going to be like a TV series with episodes." All of the episodes together form the cohesive whole of the story.

I don't know if I have another Metal Gear Solid game in me. I find they are brilliant games, and MGS3 and MGS4 are fantastic, but they are very draining. I find certain games just require a certain kind of mental investment; classic Final Fantasy games require you to acknowledge that you are embarking upon a bigass quest and that you can say good by to dozens of hours of your time if you're completionist. Metal Gear games require you to be ready to see some incredible video game moments (some of my all time favorite scenes happen in these games) but at the same time you'll be forced to face some seriously sadistic shit.
The Metal Gear Solid universe is basically an alternate reality where horrible things happen to everyone. Except for the small handful of characters that survive MGS4, I don't think there are any happy endings, and hiding from guards aside, no one is ever safe. I almost can't believe I'm saying this but after four games (I never got into the portable ones) it's hard to go into a new one knowing that everyone in the game (including the protagonist) will be lied to, dicked over, betrayed, kidnapped, beaten, tortured, murdered, poisoned, shot, immolated, dismembered or abandoned.
Crawling down the microwave tunnel at the end of MGS4 actually made me angry at how fucked up the game world had become, that it had forced this geriatric old war dog to be thrown in here. I didn't care that the end solution was a deus ex machina computer genius kid virus delivered ala ID4... I was just glad that all of the shit that had been building for four games was over. I was relieved that Snake could finally relax.
Shit, I'll probably still pick it up. This is exactly what Kojima wants. :|
