New Mirror's Edge to be open-world action-adventure
EA is assuring fans that the reboot of Mirror's Edge will not be turned into a shooter, but will be more action-adventure.
EA's announcement earlier this week of the return of Faith in a new Mirror's Edge was met with much celebration from fans of the original game. The company isn't releasing too many details about the game, the company is assuring fans that the reboot will not be turned into a shooter, but will be more action-adventure.
"The first game was a lot about running away from things," EA's Patrick Söderlund told Eurogamer. "And, even though you want to have sections with that, you also want Faith... she's a powerful character and you want her to take control. You'll see a little bit more of that in this game. Again, we're not going to turn this into a shooter. On the contrary, in fact. But we are going to evolve Faith and the story. Once we show more of this people will be genuinely excited. I am personally extremely excited about it."
He told CVG that the game would be "First-person, running predominantly--this will be more of an action adventure game, but true to what the first one was to a large extent." He said the same formula would not work again because it wasn't really the vision DICE had for the IP. What DICE wants to build can't be done on current generation he said.
In a conference call yesterday, EA Label's boss Frank Gibeau revealed the game would be an "open world action adventure" and that fan reaction had been "great."

I particularly loved the weapons combat in the original, because it was so different to the weapons combat in other games, in that you could only use weapons you stole from guards, and there was no reloading, so you had to throw the weapons away. I thought that made for excellent cinematic action. I will be very sad if they've completely removed guns. Just running is boring. They should have guns for people who like them, just not make the compulsory.

But it's so cool to grab a gun off a guard and shoot them with it. I really did think the way the first game approached guns was unique. There isn't one other game out there which treats guns the same way, i.e. you can only use guns you take from guards, and can't reload them. It feels so badass.
I guess I'm in a minority though. I'll still enjoy the game without guns, I'm sure, though I will miss them. Maybe they could sell a guns add-on as cheap DLC for people like me.

Well, it's a design issue. I absolutely think there's something to the idea of an open parkour world in which it's more about improvising and making your own route versus intuiting the way the level designer intended for you to traverse the world. Certainly I think the former is a more interesting premise than the latter. Execution would make or break it, though.
