Playing online multiplayer on the PlayStation 4 is going to require players to have a PlayStation Plus subscription. The policy is similar to the what Microsoft uses for Xbox 360 and Xbox One for Xbox Live Gold.
"PS4 multiplayer online access requires PSN account & PS Plus subscription," fine print says in the bottom of this Sony-released video (via Polygon). A PS+ membership runs $49.99 a year, or $17.99 if you can choose to pay for three months. Xbox Live Gold costs $59.99 a year.
You won't need a new membership for the PS4 if you already have one for Vita or PlayStation 3.

PS Plus seems pretty worth it with how much shit they give you.

I know some of you have gotten great value out of PS+, but it still seems like a bad move to me, particularly if they follow suit with XBL Gold and limit the streaming services to paying accounts as well. It basically means that multi-console warriors will be paying ~$100 a year for both services and even more casual people who'd like to play a little MP once in a while will be screwed. Pay $50, get games you may or may not want just for the privilege of playing some CoD or Battlefield MP (which you bought) with your buddies once in a while.
Not every gamer fits the mold where $50/year is "well worth it." I know people who have an X360 and they only have like 3 games and primarily use it for Netflix. The XBL subscription really sucks for them, and it's totally extortion too since there's no service being offered by MS in that situation. Yeah, we don't know all of the details yet but this smacks of "MS got away with it in the last go around, we want subscription-based cash too!"

If you want to play a little MP for a month or two when a particular game comes out, you can certainly pay for a month or two of service. I'm saddened that there's no free MP any longer and do see that as a loss for the consumer, but for me personally, there aren't going to be so many online titles exclusive to MS that I see any sort of long term MP plan need for. I'm OK with paying for one service, which I did for years with LIVE and now will pay Sony for instead.
I think if the general public created as huge of a hue and cry about paid multiplayer as they did over the restrictive DRM, Sony would likely consider some further incentives, since single player games are still their 1st party bread and butter, at least for now.

I'll just put this here then. 1 year PS+ for $40 at Best Buy right now if you sign up for rewards zone (its free if you don't already have an account)

Only until the XB1 comes out. Sony seems committed to keep it going on the PS4 and into the future, MS just threw it out there as a bonus for a few months for some reason.
And it's hard to say if PS4's online services are the same or better or worse as none of us have actually used it yet, except for finalSpart4n. We pretty much know what to expect from MS, more of the same and a 1000 friends list upgrade, but all we can say for Sony is they'd be idiots to not improve it, especially since they want to charge for it now.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony felt they could get away with charging for multiplayer precisely because of the utter failings of their rivals over at Microsoft.
We pay a price for lack of competition. If the Xbone is a disaster, don't be surprised if Sony regains some of that infamous arrogance that hobbled the PS3. Be careful what you wish for. -

I wonder how this will affect self-published games on the platform and future cross-platform stuff like portal 2. I wonder if PSN+ is only required to access the MMOs considering that consoles do the subscription a little different than whats on PC. Didn't DCUO require PSN+ before it went Free2Play.
I have a feeling we might be confusing MMO PSN+ and normal multiplayer. I wonder if they will clarify this. -
HIJACK - I've been an Xbox Live Gold subscriber and Xbox owner since day 1. The Xbox Live network to me is bar none the best, while all I've heard from PS3 gamers is how lackluster the PSN is. I remember the whole "each developer sets up their own friends list" and such. There was nothing cohesive about it.
Has it gotten better? That's one of my major 'on the fence' things about going PS4 this generation. I don't have a PS3, so I don't know, but I hear from all of you and others.-
I've been in the same boat as you, but as I get older I've been playing multi less. XBL has been less and less of a good deal when all of its perks are assumed. PSN has come a long way. I'd say for friends and multi it doesn't match XBL, but on value and making paid subscription worth it, it rules. They may have a rough patch at launch, but I think PSN will be comparable.
If you are a sports fan who watches a ton of tv, XBL is the way to go. -
Live Gold = PSN Plus. This is the pay for service.
Live = PSN. This is the free service.
The multiplayer friends list thing you're talking about was an issue when the two systems launched. I only play Call of Duty online, but that series uses the PS3 friends list. Off the top of my head I don't know any games from the past few years that haven't done the same.
