Console gamers will be able to wave their hands in front of the next-generation Kinect when Xbox One launches later this year. However, PC users will have to wait a bit longer to play around with Microsoft's newly updated 3D camera tech. The next-gen Kinect for Windows will be available in 2014, Microsoft has confirmed.

The slight delay in the PC version was expected, given that the first PC Kinect also trailed the console release by a few months. The first generation of Kinect differed on PC and console slightly--although it's unclear how different the PC version of Kinect 2 will be. Microsoft did say that " the new Kinect sensor and the new Kinect for Windows sensor are being built on a shared set of technologies," which suggests that while largely similar, there may be minute differences between the two versions.

I see you remember the game Stroker for the Commodore64.

Love to see what people can hack out of this. I really hope it's not different hardware though.

I would love to see a slightly smokey/hazy room like in a nightclub with multiple lasers to create some kind of 3 dimensional workspace for controlling lighting that can be manipulated via Kinect Minority Report style. If the Kinect could use Infra Red to monitor peoples unit then it would not need to see which would be fine for looking through smoke machine smoke.
