Updated with additional details from Sega.

Sega's next Sonic the Hedgehog game, Sonic Lost World, will be exclusive to Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. "The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in the announcement.

According to Nintendo, this announcement demonstrates "the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform." This comes a day after EA officially announced it was not developing games for Nintendo's latest home console.

Sonic Lost World is actually just one of the games part of this deal. Sega later announced that Nintendo's exclusive relationship covers "the next three titles" in the series, and will make Nintendo consoles "the number one destination for Sonic gaming." Additional details are expected in the weeks to come.

"Sonic the Hedgehog has proven incredibly successful on Nintendo platforms and we are pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Nintendo," Sega of America president John Cheng said in a prepared statement. "As we initiate this new exclusive partnership with the next three titles we believe that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are ideal platforms to showcase the evolution of the Sonic brand."

While snagging exclusivity for Sonic the Hedgehog makes sense, given the close alignment of Nintendo and Sega's audiences, we're not sure if it's a particularly great sign. You know what system also had a lot of exclusive Sonic games? Dreamcast.

I guess I am glad I have a WiiU then, this is sort of crazy only on the WiiU? After Sonic Generations I would of thought it be on all systems again. Maybe they are making Sonic generations 2 that will be multi platform?

Huh, well I hope they show i at E3.

#1 destination for Sonic titles IE other sonic games will be multi-platform from the sounds of it.

One of them includes the next Mario and Sonic at the olympic games, so it's only one more.

Also I would even wonder how exclusive they are, the way Iwata worded it, "to launch exclusively for WiiU and 3DS" makes me think it's a timed deal for a few years and then they can port them elsewhere.

I wonder if it will be co-developed? That could bring some quality back into Sonic games that haven't existed for a long time. Glad to see some 3rd party support!

        I hope it's not honestly.

Anytime I see a comment like this, I wonder.. did you play Colors and Generations? and if you did and didn't like them well then you just don't like Sonic games.

The last Sonic game I played actually was some weird Sonic fighting game for the GBA or maybe it was the DS I don't recall. I'll need to check those out but I still think a codeveloped game would be supreme.

Eh I don't know, that's like having coffee in your tea imo. Sega and Nintendo each have their own little charm to their games.

Last Sonic game I played was Sonic 4 Ep 1. It was pretty terrible.

After that I just went back to playing Sonic 2 over and over again.
