Rumor: Next Call of Duty is 'Ghosts,' coming November 5

The next Call of Duty game will be subtitled "Ghosts" and is planned for launch on November 5, according to a pair of leaks.

A UK retailer may have leaked the title of the next Call of Duty game, along with a purported release date from leaked Target ad. According to the leaks, it will be called "Call of Duty: Ghosts," and is planned to release on November 5, 2013.

CharlieIntel (via Kotaku) reports that a now-pulled ad from the UK retailer Tesco showed the box art above, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Meanwhile, a leaked circular for Target shows the game's release date, promising a discount on other games for placing a reservation. The Target circular is for May 5-11, which means that if this all holds water, Activision must be planning to announce the game soon. As Kotaku notes, this is the time of year the company usually announces new Call of Duty titles.

If it pans out, it would retroactively prove true claims by YouTube user Drift0r, who posted a video calling the title in late March. But, Drift0r also claimed it would be next-gen only, and the PS3/360 box art seem to debunk that part of his claim, at least.

None of this is confirmed, so consider it a rumor until we hear official word. Shacknews has contacted Activision and will update as more information becomes available.

I like the games and I don't find the engine it's running on to be horrible but it's sure getting long in the tooth. They'll have to give up that 60FPS that makes those games so sweet however, if they want to look at something along the lines of Frostbite/Crytek and even Unreal.

Not if it's developed for next-gen consoles with that in mind, as well as the PC having the benefit of handling modern graphics.

Yeah except for the fact it's an X360 package design. It'll be the same old old Quake3 engine it's been on

Part of me wonders if it will be the same engine till the next gen has a large enough player base, it could be several more years till we get an engine change if that's true.

The Modern Warfare franchise had a lot of deeply developed characters that were killed off, so "ghosts" would be a way to handle that. It could be a CoD:BLOPS style montage-fest. Or it could just be something concentrating on Ghost and his squad.

Sledgehammer was originally working on a game featuring Ghost, which was hinted at by Craig Fairbrass, the voice actor for Gaz and Ghost. But Sledgehammer was moved to developing Call of Duty Elite, among other things.

Ubisofts lawyers will challenge this. If somebody at zenimax gets uppity about notch using the name Scrolls, no way will ubisoft allow anyone to encroach on their ghost recon name.
