SimCity 'Cheetah' speed returns

As SimCity's servers crumbled to rubble and dust at launch, EA turned the fastest speed 'Cheetah' off as it scrambled to ease their load and let people actually play. While the game has mostly been stable for a few weeks now, EA held off on re-enabling Cheetah speed until it was certain it wouldn't bring things tumbling down again. Which it now is. As of yesterday, Cheetah speed is back for all players.

"Yes, it's true -- we've recently brought back Cheetah Speed," Maxis said on Twitter yesterday. "We're also working on Update 2.0, so stay tuned for more info."

Update 2.0 is known to include fixes for lost progress, Recycling Centers, fire engines, and an assortment of other bits and pieces.

Cheetah speed returned to the test servers at the end of March, but EA was holding off on fully rolling it out lest it bring the house down. Go forth and simulate cities, watching those little people and vehicles skitter around at comical speeds. Whilst listening to Yakety Sax, preferably.

I wonder how many concurrent players they're at now, and how many sales they had. The last we heard were the 1.5 million launch numbers.

well i stopped playing. Honestly, there just isnt that much to do in the game. Early game is quite a mad dash to get to late game and when you get there, there really isnt that much to do.

Gameplay was fun for awhile, but then it just stopped being fun. I´m guessing that the City size and mechanics are to blame, from my standpoint at least. Never had issues with stability or servers.

I´m guessing SimCity will go into the buyers remorse bin for me, not many games go there.

Why do you think they could re-enable cheetah speed? It's not that they've fixed the problem (they're too busy working on Nissan DLC), it's that their userbase has dried up the the point where it won't destroy the servers to turn it back on.

It'll take some effort to get playing again. I completely lost interest once things started breaking down. Sucks too, because for the first few days it was really fun.

        Ditto.

It's a fun game until your city is basically crushed under its own weight and you can't do a damn thing about it.

Fixing recycling centers and stuff will be good. I'll probably pick it back up and try it when 2.0 is released.

I've barely played the game; I got so sick of all the problems I gave up. I'd like to get back to the game, but my enthusiasm has been replaced with resentment.

So are all the features working now? Looks like I'm one day off from my prediction:

No. I believe the leaderboard stuff and global market (where prices on goods and materials fluctuate based on what everyone is buying and selling) is still disabled. Those were taken out along with cheetah speed, but now only cheetah speed is back.

And of course lots of stuff is still broken and planned to be fixed in later patches, like the recycling centers, tourism, etc.

I almost hate that this is an option in Origin because if you ever need to talk to support they fucking ask you do it, when the problem obviously has nothing to do with the game install.

'fixed' is a bit much. More like they made it just slightly less dumb. The idiocy of the agent system is still there, they now consider using longer routes to get to their destination if the shorter one is backed up.

I just don't understand this entire project. Craddock needs to get embedded and get the ENTIRE FUCKING EVOLUTIONARY CHAIN of simcity 5. I mean the whole thing. this is such a disaster of scope creep, lack of planning, lack of testing, lack of foresight, lack of everything. and it's a venerable title they KNEW was going to be huge. this isn't some indie niche game that we could give a pass to, in lieu of launch problems. this is EA proper. and it's royally fucked from end to end.

The main simulation is all client side, but the servers relay info and data from each city to other cities within a region. Their theory was removing the fastest game speed would reduce the frequency and amount of those updates and data transfers and thus stress on the servers. Saves are also server side, but I don't think faster individual growth within a single city because of cheetah speed would really make that much more of a difference there either.
