Journey dev's next game is 'years' away

On thatgamecompany's next: "It's going to be huge. And I don't mean it's going to be a long sprawling game, I mean it's going to be an IMPORTANT game. I genuinely believe it's going to change the industry in a really positive way."

After sweeping the GDC Awards with Journey, all eyes are on Jenova Chen and thatgamecompany. What will their next game be? We know it will be online-enabled somehow, and not exclusive to PlayStation. But beyond that, little is known.

Asher Vollmer, a former employee of TGC, announced yesterday that he's planning on leaving "one of the indie-est companies on the planet" to go indie himself. Why? Because the "New Game" is still years away, and he didn't want to give up all that time for "a game that isn't truly mine."

"It's going to be huge," he said of TGC's next on his personal blog (via IGN). "And I don't mean it's going to be a long sprawling game, I mean it's going to be an IMPORTANT game. I genuinely believe it's going to change the industry in a really positive way."

He added, "The Game is going to be incredible, but it is moving slowly. There are YEARS remaining on the project."

Journey came out more than three years after the release of TGC's second game, Flower. If TGC's next game is going to be as big (if not bigger) than that, it will likely be a long time before we hear another peep from the team.

Honestly, I don't look forward to games anymore, except for maybe the next 3D mario. I have enough games in my backlog to last me years, not even exaggerating. And fucking good games too, like System Shock 2, Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door, Secret of Mana, and the list goes on and on...

Wouldn't it be awesome if every 5 years or so, the industry couldn't release new games for a year. One year of catch up every 5 years would be awesome, but never happen for $$ reasons.
