Thief trailer reveals new voice actor

The debut trailer for Square Enix's upcoming Thief reboot has leaked onto the internet. While the publisher will undoubtedly attempt to squash this leak, you can watch said video (for now).

Update: The trailer is now official. Square Enix has revealed the debut trailer for their upcoming Thief reboot. It's unclear if the trailer is running in-engine on real-time hardware, but it certainly looks like what a next-gen game should look like. The trailer ends with a note saying it will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, and other "next-generation consoles" that haven't been announced yet.

A still from the leaked trailer

Perhaps the biggest hubbub surrounding the trailer isn't how it looks, but how it sounds. YouTube commenters have already pointed out: "That's not Garrett's voice. That's not Stephen Russell. This is just as bad as Kojima axing David Hayter from doing Solid Snake." NeoGAF seems to have a more tempered response, noting "As awesome as that was, I'm disappointed in no gameplay and no Stephen Russell. However, his new voice is still pretty cool and very Garrett-like. " Here's Square Enix's official description of the game:
There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change. Into this shadowy world steps Garrett the Master Thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose how they approach and overcome each challenge and forge their own path through the game.

Shame about the voice actor. Stephen Russell had a sarcastic and non-chalant edge to his voice. This new guy is all serious business and shit.

Nice to see they kept the mechanical eye in though. I guess this is a true sequel then and not a remake of sorts?

Looks nice enough. For a cinematic.
The hand springing out of the smoke to snatch the word "thief" away, made me lol.

Who would publish anything on April 1st?

What is it with stealth games and the removal of iconic voice actors at the moment? Thief, Splinter Cell, Metal Gear. Cats and dogs living together I tells ya!

did you play the first thief? there was a lot of combat options in it, lots of hard to sneak around enemies that you sometimes had to fight.

I know. That's why Thief 2 is the best in the series - they added in the combat stuff in the first because they were afraid how people would react if it was stealth-only. When the first one did well enough they felt brave enough to go all out and we got the incredible stealth masterpiece that is Thief 2.

Ditto, surprisingly. It sucks that they changed, but the new voice isn't terrible. Still, Stephen Russel added so much to that character.

Actually, scratch that, I've watched it a few times and the new guy isn't a patch on Russel, that wry/sarcastic/world-weary tone just added so much more to the character. If this is any indication, all we're getting is a gruff generic whisper now. Huge shame, even if they get the gameplay right (and the jury is still out on that).

French Canadians swear like no other culture on earth, I'm sure. We had some Ubi Montreal guys over when I worked at Ubi, all cool as fuck, but they offended half the Indian restaurant we were in at the time with loud swearing in both languages and I loved it, haha.

Is it just me or did Garrett look suspiciously like Desmond/Altair/Ezio????

      M. Night Shyamalan twist: this is an Assassins Creed game and Garrett is an ancestral assassin!!!! You heard it here first.

Nicolas Cantin, the art director for Thief 2013/4, designed the lead characters in the earlier Assassin's Creed games.

No Russell means no purchase for me. Similarly uninterested with any franchise game that tries to have a new VA for established main characters, whether it's Splinter Cell, Resident Evil, whatever. Do it right or don't waste our time.

I'd more guess that it'll be ok but won't quite capture that magic of the original. That said, Even with the issues that it had, Deus Ex was pretty good.

That is my suspicion as well, probably be a fun game but based on that trailer and some of the comments they have made it seems more like an Assassins creed type game rather than Thief.

What? So you're already buying it simply because they made it, and don't care if it's nothing like the original trilogy?

I'm all for change, but it's not like they've shown anything insanely good OR bad so far. Though Stephen Russel was amazing, srsly
