Torment: Tides of Numenera shatters Kickstarter record

We don't often report on Kickstarter projects before they are fully funded, but the just-launched crowdfunding for Torment: Tides of Numenera is an exception. When a game blasts through its $900,000 goal, tops $1 million in record time, and blows through two stretch goals in the first 24 hours, that's worth noting.

InXile Entertainment's RPG, reminiscent of PlaneScape: Torment but set in the world of Monte Cook's Numenera, set a Kickstarter record of collecting more than $1 million in six hours. It easily beat OUYA's previous best of $1 million in eight hours and 22 minutes.

The numbers continue to climb, as the project now sits at $1.76 million with still 29 days to go. In addition to promising a retrospective on the development of the original PlaneScape: Torment, inXile has already posted three stretch goals. The first two--$1.2 million to choose the player's gender, and $1.5 million for a deeper story and another novella--have already being surpassed, and the third at $2 million promises an even deeper story, this time with contributions from Numenera creator Cook.

Based on the progress, I think inXile will need plenty more stretch goals before the Kickstarter campaign ends on April 5, especially with PayPal pledges being accepted starting sometime today. The game is estimated to be completed in December 2014.

Frankly I don't see anything overtly special about Cook's contributions. He's a bright light in the world of RPG design but honestly NOT that bright. I'd be more enthused if this had Avellone (does it?) and Colin McComb who were the 2 main reasons that Torment was so good.

      Am I missing something here because I don't think I am. :(
