Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag features pirates, leaked marketing materials reveal

A rumored marketing poster for the next Assassin's Creed game calls it "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag" and showcases pirates.

The next Assassin's Creed game is taking place in a new time period with a new hero, Ubisoft has promised. However, the cat may have been let out of the bag early thanks to leaked marketing materials. A poster shows the title as "Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag," and features an assassin surrounded by pirates.

The poster, sent to Kotaku from an anonymous tipster, isn't set to be put up in stores until March 4, which may mean the reveal is close-by. This also more-or-less matches a Reddit user who claimed to have seen the title ("Black Flags") in a PowerPoint presentation that was being worked on by a woman sitting in front of him.

If real, AC4 could expand upon the well-received sailing portions of Assassin's Creed 3. We'll update as more information becomes available.

So we are going back in time? The "Golden" Age of Piracy was before 1776. Time will tell i suppose

I've enjoyed every game of the series so far, though I haven't found the time for AC3 yet. Why should they stop?

You're nuts if you call the pirating missions in AC3 garbage. The stood out by far to be the most exciting part of the game.

AC3 had it's couple tedious downsides (the optional trading stuff) but other than that i found it to be what the series needed to freshen things up after 3 similar games in a row.

fuck you, i want to play yearly AC games! it's not their fault that you would rather play shitty games that you can't be bothered to beat when i keep telling you to play AC3 already!

Other than PC bullshittery with DRM and uplay crap, the AC games are routinely very good. I say bring them on

Assassin's Creed 2 has two non-numbered sequels. I'm surprised that we're already onto 4. I guess I should started the third one already, it must have some story elements that prohibit an Ezio type scenario.

Yeah it kind of wraps up the trilogy (which was the previous games).

They would need to reboot with a new premise most likely.

haha. So says dread pirate Captain Stern.

Realistically, there will be a variety of famous port cities that you can sail to. I think this is exciting. There aren't often pirate games about. It will be interesting to see what faction the Assassins will be associated with, or if they are more independent in this period. Looks neat.

Damn, I was hoping for a sequel set in ancient China or Japan. So much potential.

Yea agreed, AC3 was very underwhelming even though its setting isn't used much.

This is really a big let down. I know Connor wasn't the most charismatic individual, but he suffered from a mediocre story. I think it wold have been nice to see Connor in "western" times. In fact I was counting on it. Lots of desperado's and cowboys vs Indians and lots of corrupt land owners and train barons.
This would have been an interesting time and it would have been fantastic to give Connor another look, much older and seasoned.

I felt the line were he says "Do you think me so soft that by calling me son I might change my mind? How long did you sit on this information? Or am I to believe you discovered it now? My mother’s blood may stain another’s hands. But Charles Lee is no less a monster, and all he does, he does by YOUR command! A warning to you both - choose to follow me or oppose me and I will kill you."

was him coming to his own. Hes fighting style is aggressive and I loved that also. I felt like a hunter and these men were sheep.

When he threatened to kill both his father and Washington. I knew he was growing a pair and I wanted to explore that. It seems I will not get that chance.

Sorry I don't know how to use spoiler tags.

Yeah, I felt pretty much the same. I really liked Conner as a character but the story really wasn't told well. What you suggest could have been really cool.

Hell, I'm still trying to figure out how Connor is related to the protagonist.
I thought we were playing his descendants, not just the genealogy of Assassin's through time.

hmm, this sounds interesting. so potentially they can flesh out the sailing portions of the game, maybe even integrate it into the open world. instead of the boring trading from AC3 or going back to buying businesses, you could make money by expanding your pirate empire.

they could really fuck this up by doing more of the same sailing missions which seemed to have turned to easy mode with no real challenge (yet still fun) halfway through what AC3 had to offer.

doubt this is true. the first bit of marketing material is generic comic art? if it's not outright fabrication, i wouldn't be surprised if this is maybe art for a preorder bonus graphic novel or something.

On hindsight, seeing how well developed the naval missions were on AC3, we should have seen something like this happen a mile away.
