Rayman Legends delayed to September, PS3 and 360 versions announced

Rayman Legends has been delayed, and the game is no longer a Wii U exclusive. When it releases in September, it will also be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Rayman Legends was due in just a few scant weeks on the Wii U, but the game has now been pushed all the way to September. The good news, at least for those who don't own a Wii U, is that the game will be available on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well.

The announcement today didn't give a specific date in September for the release, but Ubisoft was very frank about its reasoning for the move. "We heard from many Xbox and PlayStation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system", said EMEA chief marketing officer Geoffroy Sardin, in the announcement. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

Of course, this is bad news for those who hoped Rayman would serve as a system seller to expand the Wii U ownership base and attract more developers to the fledgling console. But if you just want to play a pretty HD platformer on your current console, you're all set.

This is a travesty, this really hurts the Wii U and gives me one less game to look forward to this month.

At least this will give the game an install base that will be large enough for it to be a success though I'm bummed about it moving to September.

Why didn't they just release the WiiU version, then port it?

This makes me think they're basically getting rid of any reason to have the WiiU controller, so they could homogenize the development....sigh.

My guess is that the dev costs were getting too high and so they had to find a way to justify it, hence the delay and more platforms. So sad, the WiiU needed this, and this month needed it. Now it goes to a month where it will be lost amongst the big releases.

Wife won't like this. Played the demo in store and went out and bought a WiiU for this game specifically.

According to IGN, the mode with the co-op tablet functionality is still in, and still Wii U exclusive. Presumably the other versions will be somewhat stripped down.

To clarify, only because they are pushing it back to Sept. I don't care if it's multiplatform.

I don't care about it going multiplatform, but the gist of the announcement is that they are only delaying the WiiU game so they can get the multiplatform version working and launch together. Total bullshit if true - they should release the WiiU version when it's done.

on the other hand releasing later on Wii U means there will be more Wii U owners when the game is $60 instead of $30 with a bunch of used copies lying around

It would make more sense to release the game NOW on Wii U if it's done, rather than delay it. Why? There are millions of Wii U owners that are pretty hungry for *any* new game.

And when it finally drops there is going to be some first party Nintendo game on store shelf (Mario kart), and new consoles. So the interest in this game could be long gone, but hey let the brass make their calls.

I hope they release on PC too, that's how I played Origins, in 2048p. I imagine Origins sold well enough to justify porting the sequel. But I guess I'll play on PS3 if I HAVE to, geez.

This is bad news for Nintendo though, but on the other hand it doesn't really make sense to
not release it for the other consoles. And this does mean more copies will be sold, and in turn we have a greater chance of Rayman goodness in the future, and maybe even some Beyond Good and Evil 2.

That's the third Nintendo exclusive to go multi-plat in a single week, right on the heels of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and potentially Castlevania LOS2: Mirror of Fate. Anyone see a pattern here? Glad I did not invest in a Wii U.

To clarify, Mirror of Fate is currently 3DS exclusive right now, but the developer has confirmed that the game's original HD assets are ready to go should they want to do home console ports. You don't make a comment like that unless it's already planned...especially when the game isn't out yet, a la Rayman Legends.

I could understand that UbiSoft wants to make more money with a multiplatform release, but this move make nosense for 3 reasons :

      - The game is finished ! So why not release it with ALL hungry wii owners outhere. it could still be a timed exclusives. PS3 / 360 owners are happy they will get the game ( as for Ninja Gaiden III Razor Edge ) and Wii owners can enjoy a game they've waited for MONTHS

      - Release the game is September is SUICIDE ! GTA V is going to be released in September. And Nintendo will unleash all the heavyweights of 2013 in that period. Release the game in that period is ridiculous

      - Multiplatform games doesn't translate all the time in more money. The last example is Epic Mickey 2 which sold less than Epic Mickey 1 despite being on nearly ALL platforms outhere !

So this moves look not only as a bad PR move ( 3 weeks before the release of the game ), but also a potential poor business move as well...
