Nintendo teases new Zelda, Wind Waker remake for Wii U

Nintendo teased two upcoming Zelda projects during its Nintendo Direct today: the new Wii U Zelda in development, and an HD Wind Waker remake.

It should come as no surprise that Nintendo is working on a new Zelda title for Wii U, but since it may be a long way off the company is producing a remake of one of its most beloved series titles as well. Nintendo teased some tidbits about its next new game, along with a Wind Waker rerelease, during today's Nintendo Direct.

The Wind Waker remake is coming sometime this fall, and will feature updated graphics, and a "tune up" to the experience. It will also be playable on the GamePad alone, and Miiverse-enabled. Series director Eiji Aonuma shared some screens of the title, prettied up for the HD console.

He also shared some extremely vague details about the new Zelda title in development, which intends to "rethink the conventions of Zelda." Specifically, he said the team is reconsidering elements like completing dungeons in a set order, or playing the game alone. It sounds like the next Zelda title will have multiplayer elements and be a bit less linear, but we'll have to wait a while to hear much more about the game.

I'm not sure about the lighting in the screenshots, it makes it look a little washed out. The thing I really liked about Wind waker's style is how bold the colors were and how they contrasted so much from each other. I think you lose that with these day shots on windfall island.

If the multiplayer turns out anything like the trolltastic four swords games I'll be happy.

Haha, agreed, I wouldn't mind a whole separate co-op campaign using different characters in the same world though as well (one can dream :o)

Why not just make a new wind waker for the wii u? I love the art style and have it live on the ds for years is a disservice.

You make it sound like a small task. Building an HD Zelda game up to Nintendo's standards is a huge multi year undertaking. I think more people are pulling for a 'mature' looking fully new Zelda to show of their shiny new Wii U. (Not that I think a new game in this style wouldn't be awesome).

Hopefully this kicks off development for just such a game to come out near the end of the system's cycle.

ever play Four Swords Adventures? Think something like that more unique characters instead of three other Links.

They specifically mentioned both things directly. Note that they mentioned them simple as examples of things they were considering, not elements that would absolutely be different.
