Disney Infinity confirmed, coming in June
Disney Infinity has been officially announced, confirming several of the details from earlier leaks. It will be starting to roll out in June.
Disney officially announced Disney Infinity today, confirming several of the details circulating last month. The ambitious game draws together characters from Disney and Pixar, pitching itself as a platform for "play sets" starring the cast of various film properties.
The "Play Set" story modes take you through themed stages to solve puzzles, battle enemies, and explore. You'll collect characters, vehicles, and gadgets to store in your "Toy Box," where you'll customize your own virtual world using Disney icons. You'll also be able to collect character figurines for use in the game, a la Skylanders. The initial roll-out will consist of 40 collectible pieces, 17 figurines, the Disney Infinity base, and discs that interact with characters to grant them unique powers.
The game will initially be available on consoles, and then move into mobile and online devices throughout the rest of the year. It's being handled by Avalanche Software, the company behind Toy Story 3. If you played that game and experienced its own sandbox mode, you probably have the right idea.
"Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life," said Avalanche VP John Blackburn, in the announcement. "With our platform's unique gameplay mechanics and innovative approach to user generated content within the 'Toy Box' mode, Disney Infinity will spark imaginations and provide endless hours of fun and creativity."
