Nintendo's catch-'em-all series Pokémon is finally making the jump from the DS generation of hardware to the not-quite-so-shiny-and-new-anymore Nintendo 3DS, president Satoru Iwata announced during today's Nintendo Direct presentation. Pokémon X and Pokémon Y boast a new story, new Pokémon to poach, and new camera perspectives.

Pokémon X and Y will also see the series embrace simultaneous worldwide launches, after 17 years (17!) of staggered releases. They'll arrive on 3DS in October.

"We brought Pokémon into an entirely new dimension and we're incredibly excited to bring Pokémon X and Pokémon Y to fans," Junichi Masuda, director at developer Game Freak, said in the announcement. "The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world."

What all these shiny new things are, however, is a mystery for now. Look, a trailer:

Z is the obvious half step where you get the Pokemon available in X & Y and a special starter but is otherwise the same game.

This is going to sound insane but I bought the first Pokemon game back in the day (Pokemon Blue on GB) and I remember really liking it (RPG, collecting elements, etc.) but I haven't played any games in the series since then.

The main games in the series (the ones in pairs like this) are they evolutions of the original? Or has the series gone off the rails? I guess I'm asking, knowing I liked the original, if I got the latest DS offering would I still like it?

It remains fundamentally the same, there are just a bunch of systems that have been laid on top of the basics you remember.

G/S were my favs. I haven't really been 'into' it since. The first DS game was fun, what with the online trading and whatnot (before it was abused to shit)

I'm in a similar boat. I played a bit of the first one and liked it for the most part. I was considering getting Black 2... but I was afraid that it might be a sequel of some kind and didn't want to come in the middle of stuff. Look like those games got good reviews though.

I'm actually playing through Pokemon White right now and it's pretty awesome. The last one I played was Sapphire on the GBA.

I played Red, Yellow, Gold, and Diamond I beleive, I really enjoyed the first 3 but the last one just couldn't keep my interest. If you're jonesing for that itch to be scratched though I wouldn't worry about it, it's very much the same kind of game.

I think Heart Gold and Soul Silver was when the series peaked and its been going steadily downhill since (especially black and white which were terrible IMO) but I have high hopes for this one.

I also got Blue back on the GB. I have since then played Silver - which was essentially the same game with additions (day-night cycle, pokemon can hold items i.e. berries that give them health or items that guarantee 1st move or increase xp gains and more.) Also added 150 more pokemon you could still use the original 150 (and visit the same places!)

Last year I got Black - and it somewhat missed it's charm a little (did not recognise the new 150, plus the ~150 from Diamond/Ruby) and there were only a few available from the originals : (. Otherwise it was great - there are now double team battles, rotation battles and more - and it's the same old game with tweaks here and there. Ended up playing over 100 hrs. If you liked the original then you should give it a go

X and Y? it's like they forgot to add real titles and just left placeholders so they could tell them apart.

I'm still going to buy the shit out of one of them, though

They've already done pretty much all the good colors and precious gems. Not many other places left for them to go.

I guess I'm getting a new pokemon game for the first time since diamond in 2007. Congrats to GameFreak for finally ditching the sprites though i suspect it will still have the same cries for the old pokemon that came out of that gameboy sound chip.
