Tonight at the Spike VGAs, a new cinematic trailer debuted announcing Dark Souls 2.
Tonight at the Spike Video Game Awards, a new trailer debuted for Dark Souls 2. The short cinematic look at the game didn't seem to feature any gameplay, but set the tone for another brutally difficult game set in From's fantasy universe.

I don't think so. There's no reason to wait, the DSfix works great and includes extra options that From would never add anyway, including downsampling from resolutions higher than your display supports (less jaggies as the game doesn't have proper AA support), HUD scaling and transparency options, ability to hide the otherwise always visible mouse cursor, and multiple depth of field variables.

Hold up on the unabashed excietement some details.

As we find out in issue 249, the answers to these questions are in the hands of game directors new to the Souls series, Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, who have taken the reins from Hidetaka Miyazaki. Their descriptions of how they intend to mould Dark Souls II into a more approachable form seem reasonable. But Shibuya admits that their approach will be influenced by their individual characters. “I personally am the sort of person who likes to be more direct than subtle,” he tells us. “[Dark Souls II] will be more straightforward and more understandable.” We sympathise if that sort of statement concerns you, but at the same time, we can surely agree that we would all like to see Dark Souls attain as great a presence as The Elder Scrolls. How it gets there is a worthy matter for debate, but it’s certainly a noble task.
There is some scary sounding stuff in there, also curiosity as to what Miyazaki is doing next.-
I would say that Dark Souls could really spend a bit of time explaining even the most basic game play mechanics to you, I had to look up WTF is with bonfires and how they work, stuff like that would make the game much more accessible, but I hope this doesn't result in some sort of blanket dumbing down of the whole system.

I think even the most hardcore SOULS fans can admit that some elements of the series need to be made more accessible. You didn't notice how Dark smoothed over the many wrinkles found in Demon's?
Crystal lizards and usage of demon (dark?) souls were all more streamlined. The obtuse notion of world tendencies, an awesome idea that was severely flawed in practice, was revamped into the covenant system. The glut of ore types were consolidated into ores that were fewer in number but applicable to more upgrade paths--which not only made tracking down ore easier in terms of knowing WHERE to find each type, but also forced you to make tougher decisions: use these green shards on my lightning weapon, or spend them on a fire weapon? And combat was way more nuanced in Dark than in Demon's, whose combat systems were already impressive.
Making certain systems more "accessible" won't dilute any of the fun we derive from peeling back layers from these dark and mysterious worlds. If anything, we'll probably get to concentrate more on the fun stuff--upgrades, tough decisions, and tougher battles that force us to evolve in our approach to the many types of encounters these games offer--and less on the busy work. I say again, world tendency in Demon's was a good idea that SUCKED in execution.
As long as Dark 2 retains a level of difficulty that reinforces the fact that it was your fault, not the game's, that YOU DIED, a slow and methodical pace, and severe punishments for death that make players invest in their characters, it will be a Souls game in every way that counts.-

Exactly. I consumed several demon souls until about halfway through my first play-through because I had no idea you could use them to craft new weapons and spells. I also didn't know that you had to give Flamelurker's soul to the world 2 blacksmith in order to forge said weapons and spells in the first place.
All sorts of esoteric stuff that I would have preferred to have explained to me. Those explanations would have enhanced my enjoyment of that first play-through, not hurt it.-
that I would have preferred to have explained to me. but how? codex drops or through NPC conversation? now that we see it's going to be opened up to the masses, the formula is going to change. if so, it has to change SLOWLY. I mean ye olde adventure games there's tons of shit you don't know about but it's there for diligent players to come across, if they choose to really delve into the game.
making everything superficial I think will really backfire. explanations are there for careful players. making souls 2 very shallow is really going to lose a lot of its charm.
but since the torch is being passed to some folks that want it to be an elder scrolls game, is that good or bad? theoretically good, I suppose... ?

I'm not too worried about that. I thought Namco handled promotion of Dark 1 very well, and one of the selling points they hit over and over was the game's difficulty and appeal to "core" gamers.
I don't think Namco would let these new guys muck with the Souls formula to the extent that it would damage the series' reputation. At the same time, Namco is a publisher. Publishers want to make money. So the series does need to broaden its appeal by making certain elements more accessible, as stated in my post above. From may handle Dark 2's development, but no way Namco would let new blood steer the ship too far off course. Also, I have to assume there are plenty of Demon's and Dark 1 developers still on the team, so I would think their input would be valuable.-
You have more faith in publishers than I do. I've seen too many series lose steam the further into them they got. Bringing on new "directors" with new goals is a huge red flag. Look at something like Deus Ex. Who could have imagined that one of the best games of all time would be followed up by a travesty like Invisible War.
I'm not saying this game will be terrible but I'm certainly more worried now. With so little information out though the thing that gives me hope is that the trailer looked very, very much in the Dark Souls style.
Like you said in your first post I can definitely admit that better explaining some aspects of the game would not be a bad thing at all. If that's all they mean by "accessible" I'm fine with that.-
Another example is the Dead Space series. It went from a Resident Evil 4 style of survival-horror with some great scares and a terrifying atmosphere to a more action oriented game with brighter colors, more set-pieces and a horribly voiced protaganist to it's up-and-coming third installment which looks more like Army of Two: In Space!

If all they change is making it slightly less obscure when it comes to describing the systems of the game. If the game remains tough and punishes you for impatience as it did before... maybe it still has a chance. It's just that this game had a magic formula which just worked and worked very, very, well. I don't want them to fuck with it. And why should they? The game sold well and reviewed well. There is always room for improvement but I'm terrified that they are going to try to 'fix' something which wasn't broken and assume it's a good thing, when it actuall kills the spirit of what made the game so amazing.

That ore thing is kind of a bad example, 'cause it demonstrates a way in which Dark Souls was actually more complex, not less complex. WT was also kind of bad, but it's also a bad example because its absence was pretty sorely felt in Dark Souls. Gutting WT (along with spirit form, which halved your health) and not putting much in its place made the whole "alive/dead" mechanic carry a lot less weight. Really a one step forward, two steps back situation.
You don't hear people talk about it much, of course, 'cause the game still had a whole bunch of new features to generally compensate, but those are definite flaws that should be addressed in a sequel.

To give some reassurance to anyone still reading this thread:
“This new chapter in the Dark Souls saga presents opportunities for us to drive innovation in gameplay design, develop an entirely new story, and expand the scope of the world in which the player interacts with the game. We have taken these necessary steps with Dark Souls II in order to evolve the overall experience of the Dark Souls series. The entire development team is striving to make Dark Souls II an experience that is fresh while not forsaking its roots in presenting players with challenging gameplay. Our goal is to surprise and delight our fans with new experiences and plot twists while enticing new players to join our dark journey.”
