Fans of of the Wing Commander and Privateer games should enjoy the view from the cockpit as the video shows off the AI in dogfights and flying in formation. "The Squadron 42 / Star Citizen pilot AI will be the most sophisticated AI that I've attempted on any of my games," Roberts said on the Roberts Space Industry blog. "My goal is to take the ideas that I pioneered with Wing Commander and later games; distinct personalities, dynamic learning, signature moves to next level with the power of modern CPUs."

Roberts also said the the video is definitely a rough work in progress. Explosions and lasers are all placeholder, and he plans some extra work on shield effects.

Go there if you want to pledge. there's only SIX days left if you want to get in on the Alpha/Beta and get all the goodies (read upgraded ships)

I personally CAN'T WAIT till this comes out. Privateer used up sooooo much of my time.

So was I wrong in hearing that going to kickstarter instead gets you more goodies for your buck?

So...what exactly are they doing, leaking a constant stream of O2? Can someone get Joss Whedon to help make space games.

I concur. I respect t Chris's history in the game industry but I don't think it looks good to have contrails in space. I guess I understand WHY, so you can tell the ships are moving. In Xwing and Tie Fighter we didn't need contrails though...

reason is, it helps to show movement.

one could argue about the sounds in space too, if one wants to be pedantic.

It worked in Homeworld. I think it helps the player visualize how things are moving in 3D space, which could be hard without a horizon or ground plane.

It's rough AI test video, not something meant to be pretty.

Featuring the worlds slowest moving lasers.....no seriously it looks awesome.

I really hope it lets you take advantage of the range of movement in space combat. I know in the pitch video he explained that the ships are rigged to have thrusters to allow them to fly light a jet, but there was the ability to turn off their automatic features and get full manual control. I want to be able to flip around backwards to shoot people behind me without losing forward momentum, or be able to side strafe and stuff.

BSG had some really well thought out space combat when it came to stuff like that. I wish more games had that. @ about 2:00 http://youtu.be/RMMZd89E9qs

IIRC the Wing Commander games had this from 3 on. I forget what it was called, but it was pretty much the same thing though its been awhile and it may not have functioned exactly the same. I remember flying up to a capital ship and engaging strafemode and just gliding along blasting away. It basically turns your ship into a free floating 360 degree turret.

I've already pledged, so I'm allowed to say Debbie Downer shit like, "I hope they fix the subtitles." "Rodger?" "AY AY?!" That's someone's name and a Mariachi band putting on a good show. WTF!
