'Several' Sonic games in the works for 2013
Sonic the Hedgehog is getting "several new digital titles" and "a new boxed game" in the coming year, according to Sega's European branding head Sissel Henno.
Of course Sega is working on brand new Sonic the Hedgehog games; there's clearly much more milk to squeeze out of their rodent mascot. With the exception of a kart racing game, there hasn't been a mainline Sonic game available at retail this year--something that will change in 2013.
Speaking to Toys n Playthings (via CVG), European brand licensing head Sissel Henno detailed its plans for the next year. "We will have several new digital titles launching as well as a new boxed game, so there will be plenty of opportunities to link marketing campaigns across games and merchandise," he said.
The last Sonic platformer to find release was Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2.

That sounds like a perfect reason to make another. :|
If Sega is to continue making Sonic games, they'd be better served sticking with the formula that has shown to provide good responses from the widest share of picky Sonic fans and slowly grow and advance from there.
They made good ground doing such with Sonic Generations, which seems to be the least offensive/most well regarded of modern titles. That's where they should probably establish their base for the future, IMHO.

Generations was good, but it wasn't much different from Unleashed or Colors aside from the classic Sonic sections of course (and the gimmicks that everyone absolutely hated like transforming into a werehog at night).
A Sonic Adventure with that kind of gameplay and good over-world sections like the original would be a great game. I believe the guy heading Sonic Team said he wasn't going to do any Sonic games without a gimmick though, and they've pretty much said Generations was a one-off.

"(...) there's clearly much more milk to squeeze out of their rodent mascot."
These kind of snarky remarks are really unneccessary and are becoming a tad too frequent on this site. I don't even like Sonic, as a matter of fact I hate that obnoxious little rat, but there's no need to attack a publisher for releasing more games of a series. Although I do agree that this particular one should just die, but that's mainly because of my personal distaste.
