Sleeping Dogs sales slower than expected, blamed for Square Enix loss

Square Enix has revised its projections to include a $68 million loss, citing several factors including sluggish sales of Sleeping Dogs.

Square Enix took a gamble when it took over Activision's canceled True Crime game. At the time, Activision VP of developer relations and acquisitions Dan Winters explained that it was a good game, and could be "a very successful mid-tier opportunity for someone."

Unfortunately, the gamble didn't really pay off.

Square Enix has revised its profit forecasts for the half-year ending September 30, now projecting a loss of $5.4 billion yen (approximately $68 million). Square Enix cited sluggish sales and setbacks in various departments as the reason behind the revision, chief among them slower-than-expected sales of the now-rebranded Sleeping Dogs.

Gamasutra reports that "sluggish" sales of arcade games from Square Enix subsidiary Taito, and the delay of Square's social games service, were also cited as factors in the revisions.

I dislike that Sleeping Dogs is being blamed its an awesome game, I really want a follow up down the road. This news better not stop that from happening.

I wonder what the sale figures are and what they forecasted?

They should've stripped out the dating sequences and replaced them with something else. The karaoke was horrible and the dates seemed incomplete. They have you bugging out about Tiffany after one date. She complains about stuff that doesn't even happen lol. Unlike GTA 4 and SR3 there is no flight component. If they want to get into the sandbox world, they need try and push the envelope a little. The Hong Kong setting is a good start but not enough. No flying components at alll.

I agree with this too. I love Sleeping Dogs, despite their DLC scheme that is a bit annoying to me. Probably the only game in 2012 that I actually played multiple times and finished it multiple times.

300,000 units in the US but it did better in the UK, which may indicate it did better in Europe overall. In any case, its break even had to be at least 2 million but who knows what on what terms Square Enix acquired it from Activi$ion

Truly a travesty for good, solid game to sell poorly while formulaic military face shooter sells millions despite rare honest critical thrashing.

I'm not seeing anything here about the terrible Final Fantasy XIII series or the sequels nobody asked for, shame on you Square Enix. Stop passing the buck, start making some good games yourself again before blaming others.

Yeah, no comment about how much their flagship series has sucked balls for the last several years.

Not really sure what the fuck is so hard - stop trying to 'modernize' the gameplay. People love the originals. No one likes this active 'watching your plans' vs the old school turn based method.

Make a new Final Fantasy with fancy pants graphics but oldschool exploration and gameplay and it will sell like hotcakes.

100% ^^^^ the FF series for a long time now has sucked ballz and they refuse to deliver FF VS which actually looks good?

No no its all Sleeping Dogs fault.

"Sleeping Dogs was the best selling game in the United Kingdom in the week of its release, becoming the fifth-best first week sales of 2012.[99] It retained the top spot during its second week, despite sales dropping by 15%.[100] It returned to the top spot after four weeks on sale.[101] Sleeping Dogs sales rose by 8%, despite five weeks on the chart, defeating new release Tekken Tag Tournament 2.[102]
According to NPD Group, Sleeping Dogs was the sixth-best selling game in the U.S. in August 2012,[103] at 172,000 copies.[104] PC sales for Sleeping Dogs were unable to be counted, as it is only available digitally in the U.S.[105]"

I would guess that is because FF13 and FF13-2 made them a shitload of money even if they aren't well received. FF13 has sold like 6 million copies and the combined are nearly 10 million. That makes it one of the best selling games this generation.

That's because those games didn't come out during the time period this is talking about. And as others said, they've sold quite well.

FF XIII and XIII-2 were many things, but "terrible" was certainly not one of them.

Though I won't agree with you about my "terrible" remark, I will agree that FF XIII-2 was indeed many things. 'Incomplete' being one of them.

If FF13-2 wasn't profitable I highly doubt FF13-3 would be coming out.

What really effected them is the demo. If they wanted more sales they should have put out a better demo, show off the city, give us some cars to race around the city. I was disappointed with the demo and I had a chance to pick the game up new for $40 but decided against it cause if the demo was so lack lustre what would the game be like.

I heard its supposed to be like GTA Hong Kong but they didnt show it off as that. I played True Crime and had fun with it on PS2 back in the day. I might pick this up when I get through my back log but it will probably just borrow it from a friend.

Well, if they would have made a 1/2 decent port to pc, I know a lot of people would have bought it.
If they made ALL keyboard and mouse buttons re-bindable (NO hidden keys, NO keys or actions that cant be bound), I know I for one would still buy it.
      But, they wont do it.
So they lose a lot of sales.
      Their fault.
