If you haven't opened that special Borderlands 2 chest yet--you know, the one in Sanctuary that gives you free epic gear based on your level--because you have been lacking that magical Golden Key, Gearbox is giving you a heads up that it will be giving away free keys this weekend.

There will be five chances to get a special Gearbox Shift code that will be redeemable in game for a key, Gearbox has announced. The codes will be posted on the developer's Facebook and Twitter accounts at:

  • Friday, October 26 - 4 p.m. PT (7 p.m. ET)

  • Friday, October 26 - 9 p.m. PT (midnight ET)

  • Saturday, October 27 - 3 a.m. PT (6 a.m. ET)

  • Saturday, October 27 - 9 a.m. PT (noon ET)

  • Saturday, October 27 - 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET)

The codes will only be usable once per account and active for only three hours after release. Grab them while you can and get your epic loot.

At least they are giving some heads up this time around.

I managed to get one before, all the rest have been posted around the time I get in the office.

Randy - that's nice. However - the 360 version could really use some major patching right 'bout... any time now.

            For the PC? Supposedly.

For either console platform - not yet.

Major patching? I haven't played much for the last week but to me the game feels pretty solid, couldn't really pick out any faults. Other than the fast travel nodes, there should be more of them.

No problems with the PC version.

I'm also curious what kinds of issues you are talking about? I've put 40 hours into the PC version and about 15 into the 360 version and I really haven't had a single issue. The game is pretty solid.

If you follow @DuvalMagic (Randy Pitchford, the president of Gearbox) he gave out about 15 codes over the weekend. Apparently they were testing out the system. I managed to snag about 12 of them.

Don't forget that after a patch is finished it can take over a /month/ to get certified and deployed.

True - but the end result is that I question their Quality Assurance standards. When I've invested sixty dollars in a title that fails at maintaining character data integrity and therefor ends up sitting on my shelf for a month - where is the ROI for the consumer? ...and at this point they've said nothing about even having a patch hit certification to address the 'Badass Bug', much less the 'BadassGameMode' bug.

Data integrity should have been 100% bullet-proof at launch. That's kind of important in a game featuring character customization and progression. To say that Gearbox lost me as a Day-1 adopter is an understatement at this point.

"and at this point they've said nothing about even having a patch hit certification to address the 'Badass Bug', much less the 'BadassGameMode' bug. "

It's /literally/ the top entry on the webpage.

Lots of games have these kinds of issues, we just see it more when the audience is larger because the bugs themselves are very rare. Besides, the types of things that can get lost are pretty trivial, can usually be reacquired, and never affect game progress.

/Now it is/ - sure. I've been watching their community pretty hawkish for the last month and I'm glad to see that bug is being taken care of. However, those who have lost their characters due to the BadassGameMode bug are apt to not have them recovered. :x

And I'd agree with most of what, except in this case the loss of Badass Rank isn't trivial (given their affect on character attributes) and I doubt it's nearly as rare as they claim, given that a thread discussing the 'Badass Bug' has 1,756 posts in it.

Small bugs, I don't mind - I expect. Bugs that affect character data integrity in a game all about character building - yeah, that I mind.

The golden chest is a poor system. Users get powerful weaponry for no in-game effort at all. It's a petty advertising campaign that cheapens the very root formula of the game. Borderlands is about finding cool gear and kicking ass with it. To me, using the chest is the same as having someone just give you high level weapons for nothing or glitching your way to farming a boss. Do it if you like it, but I can't respect your accomplishments. You didn't accomplish anything really.

Meh. It's basically like going over to any of the loot chests scattered throughout the game world and opening those. You'll get a random item for opening a chest. It's pretty much the same, except that the ones in the golden chest are a bit better. Also it's not like you get dozens and dozens of keys.

I totally see where you're coming from though and yes, it's basically an advertising campaign. I must say, I do prefer this and the slot machines that contain legendaries 10 million times over a game-breaking auction house. *cough*Diablo 3*cough
