Battlefield 4 to stay in 'the modern day'

Given Battlefield 4's quick turnaround after 3, it's probably unsurprising to hear that the game won't be straying too far from its predecessor. Developer DICE isn't planning on following the footsteps of Treyarch's Black Ops 2 by going into the future. Instead, the game will be set in the "modern day as it is."

Speaking at GDC Europe, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson talked about how "we feel this is a place we can be and continue with the series. Battlefield 4 can live in this space and be very successful."

The Battlefield franchise did jump into the future with 2142. However, Troedsson told audiences (via Joystiq) that the team simply wants "to stay in this genre."

While the prospect of yet another modern-day Frostbite 2-powered military FPS may lose some of its luster given the back-to-back release of Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter, DICE promises the company will diversify its offerings. "That doesn't mean there might not be a Bad Company game again in the future," Troedsson teased.

Quick turnaround? I hate when people post this. All of the other BF games were 18 months apart. This will be the same.

Bad Company and Battlefield were two different experiences...Battlefield 2 was released in 2005. With the amount they put into Battlefield 3, they should have given it a long life cycle.

2142 came out almost a year after BF2. Vietnam came out almost a year after 1942

Yes, and those titles included a setting change. That makes a difference.

I wasn't trying to justify them making BF4, I was just pointing out that Sgt_Boomstick was right.

      So what's the selling point?

Battlefield 3 had the advantage of being a large technical leak forward for the franchise and brought back 64 players and jets to the PC.

      Battlefield 4... will be... what?

It's pretty clearly going to be Battlefield 3 for next-gen consoles, which will mean another big leap in graphics. The game is coming out late 2013 at the earliest.

This exactly. It may seem redundant for PC users, but for 360 and PS3 BF3ers it will be a big upgrade. And we all know that consoles, not PC, drives the industry these days.

On the plus side, we finally get to see a game that isn't designed around the limitations of 7 year old hardware.

For me the only selling point that I feel would have a chance of actually succeeding would be them adding modes that force team play. I don't know how, but just fucking force it. BF3 was fun for a few hours, but I don't have the time or the will to play in a clan, and public servers are too full of whatever-happens-to-annoy-me-that-day for me to enjoy the game.

Battlefield 4 will be Battlefield 3 with jungle maps... but they'll cost extra on top of the base game.

BF2142 imo has the best game design of any BF game to date, but was held back by technical problems (like shitty netcode). BF3 is DICE's best technically, but has some seriously just straight up dumb/bad game design. Now, if only they could combine the two into one game, say, BF2143 with the best of both, well then, that would be a glorious day indeed.

I really love BF3, but I agree with you. If they could add back the depth that came from BF2142 and BF2, then it would be prefect. I really miss the commander and squad mechanics from those games. BF3 destructiblity and class mechanics are great though.

It's weird I'm done with BF3. after the $49 gold premium package was shoved down my throat and it honestly felt like if you didn't have it I was feeling left behind. Instead of being the best shooter out there they copied mw3 and their garbage service. WTG EA

Close Quarters (and its achievements for weapons) definitely made the title appeal to the MW3 crowd. The maps are much better than the MW series, but the game turned heavily into a corridor shooter in that game mode.

It's fun, but it's certainly NOT Battlefield.

I want to see the last two expansion packs. Armored Kill looks like what I want out of Battlefield3 and there isn't much information on End Game, yet.

I don't think you could build a legitimate case where the retail release of BF3 didn't come with enough content to warrant its asking price. Nor has the usability / popularity of the standard content suffered in the wake of the DLC releases. It's still just as playable as on the first day.
