Guild Wars 2 pre-purchasing begins with beta access

April 10 is here, and so you can now pre-purchase Guild Wars 2 to secure entry into the weekend beta events.

You may remember, a month ago, the announcement that pre-purchasing Guild Wars 2 would give you access to all beta weekend events. You may also have forgotten about that, as it was announced long before you could actually buy it it. But huzzah, the day is here, and you can now make sure you're enlisted for the beta fun.

Along with scoring access to every beta weekend event ahead of GW2's subscription-free launch later this year, pre-purchasing offers a three-day headstart before that, and a bonus in-game item.

You can buy it now in three editions, starting with the $60 Standard edition. $80 gets you the Digital Deluxe version, packing various exclusive in-game items. Then, the big daddy, there's a $150 Collector's Edition with a statue, the soundtrack, and more.

Here's a new trailer to celebrate it all:

Anet said they are working with Amazon both in the US and the UK to try and get things sorted out. Hopefully they'll get it working soon for those that want to get it through Amazon. I didn't want to wait so my girlfriend and I purchased ours through Anet directly.

But... but... I don't wish to spend my weekends indoors. Spring is here!

The only thing I have that concerns me about this game is the amount of DLC. GW when it first came out was awesome. Then they micro transaction-ed the whole game and it really turned me off.

Now I'm curious if starting that way will do the same thing for me.

I think its all going to be cosmetic stuff in GW2 as far as microtransactions go, isn't it?

GW1 has DLC for character slots, bank space (account), hero slots (use your chars as heros), skill unlock packs (it's complicated and confusing) and lots of pretty pretty dresses.

The skill unlock packs aren't exactly free skills. You still have to buy the non-elite skills in the normal fashion (you just don't need to go to a certain location to get them), and you still need a tome to unlock elite skills (or you can capture them normally). Like I said, it's a little complicated, and may not make sense if you haven't played GW1.

I don't really remember any level of microtransactions from the first one that had any impact on the game. As far as I remember it was just costumes and skill pack unlocks for your heroes. Which ones turned you off?

You never needed any of the micro transaction stuff. In fact I though they handled it pretty good. Most of what is in there is costumes and extra character slots but nothing from letting you enjoy the game.

I thought GW handled the microtransactions beautifully. Every microtransaction was cosmetic, with the exception of extra character slots. If GW2 has that level of DLC, I'm 100% for it.

I think its mostly because the whole experience was new to me now then. It was the first game I think I played with a built in store in it, and I just felt like if I didn't spend tons of money I wouldn't be any good, even though this may not be the case, just seeing the store made me instantly skip passed it and think it was evil.

Are they snubbing Steam for GW2?

Maybe it violates their in game store clause.

Pre-purchase is not a pre-order. I'm pretty sure they'll sell the game on Steam before release.
