Metal Gear Online to quietly die this summer
Konami has announced that Metal Gear Online will end this summer, in three distinct phases of shutting down the service. It will go offline completely on June 21.
Remember Metal Gear Online? The PlayStation 3 exclusive launched alongside Metal Gear Solid 4, and boasted over a million members at its apex. Konami announced today that the game will officially shut down this summer.
The announcement (via Kotaku) states that the game will end in several phases. In late April, you'll no longer be able to make new characters. On May 21, the Online Shop will shut down. Finally, June 21 will see the closure of the in-game client, finally putting the game to rest for good.
Konami actually supported MGO with expansions for quite a while, but it's been three years since its heyday, and the Metal Gear Solid series is moving in different directions. If you want to relive fond memories, or just always wanted to try it out, get your time in while you can.

Can't imagine this impacts that many people anymore. Got to have a very small active community at this point. I always thought this game had great MP potential but it seemed like tremendous network difficulities, especially at launch, and the small install base (at least at launch) really hampered it from taking off. Probably my favorite online MP that is exclusive to PSN. Oh well.

Sad but inevitable. I played MGO quite a bit after it's release, but I couldn't convince any of my friends to give it a shot. I found the multiple camera views to be the highlight of the game. Switching between the different angles gave the game combat a very unique feel, and once I learned how to effectively cycle through the camera angles within each of the maps I found my K/D ratio really jump up. Unfortunately, the multiple problems Konami faced at launch seemed to doom MGO right out of the gate. Server instability and the horrible ID creation and login process discouraged my friends from even giving this game a chance.
