Max Payne 3 delayed into May [updated]

Rockstar's Max Payne 3 has shattered its planned March 2012 release window with some manner of extravagant slow-motion explosion and is now diving sideways towards a May 2012 launch, parent company Take-Two has announced.

[Update: 09:53] Rockstar has told Shacknews that it has no official comment on why Max Payne 3 is hitting PC a fortnight after consoles.

[Original] Rockstar's Max Payne 3 has dove sideways in slow-motion through its planned March 2012, shattering it, and is now heading towards a May launch, parent company Take-Two has announced. The extra time will be used, naturally, to properly finish the game.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions will be released in North America on May 15, while the PC release will come two weeks later, on May 29. Add Max Payne 3 to the list of games which frustrate and alienate PC gamers by delaying the PC release without explanation. Presumably it's the customary fear of piracy, but we've contacted Rockstar to find out what's up.

Due to the delay, pre-orders for the special edition have also been extended to April 2nd.

"We do not take changes to our release schedule lightly, and this short delay will ensure that Max Payne 3 delivers the highest quality, groundbreaking entertainment experience that is expected from our Company," Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick said in the announcement intended for investors.

The delay pushes Max Payne 3 into Take-Two's 2013 fiscal year, so the company now expects to make a net loss in FY 2012. On the bright side, it expects FY 2013 to be a stonker, with BioShock Infinite, Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, XCOM, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and "other titles yet to be announced for release that year."

I bet it's for the bad of the game. They needed more time to loosen up the graphics on level 4.

I like how 2K is not too afraid of investors to give a title more development time. This is in contrast to Activision, who arguably pushed out MW3 with a 5-hour campaign, multiplayer inferior to Black Ops, and CoD:Elite unavailable on release. Let's also not forget EA, who shoved Medal of Honor 2010 out the door half-baked.

Yeah, Max Payne 3 has been delayed for years, but a two month delay is comparatively small. Let them use that time to refine and polish. This isn't DNF.

No comment, Rockstar basically said when we asked why the PC edition is coming later.

      Delaying because of PC piracy?
