"There is cause for hope," S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s troubled developer GSC Game World teased today, helping salve fears that the studio was shutting down and its rad radioactive survival shooter series would be gone for good. It's a Festivus miracle!

"Dear Stalkers: We will not be releasing any official news until around mid January. However there is cause for hope! Good hunting!" GSC cryptically posted on Twitter.

Exactly what's happening at GSC remains unknown. Unconfirmed reports early this month said that GSC Game World had shut down after it failed to find a publisher for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 on consoles, and it wouldn't be profitable as a PC exclusive.

Then, GSC vowed "We will do our best to continue," and would at least keep its tech support, forums and store going. Further reports said that Sergei Grigorovich had been dissatisfied with progress on the sequel and so closed GSC, and even that "Ukranian law enforcement was interested in taking control of the company."

Of course, we don't yet know what January's good news is. Fingers crossed that GSC has been saved and will continue work on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

Yeah, thats kind of weird. Half of me wants to say its a PR stunt for Stalker 2, half of me wants to say the Ukraine is a an odd country.

Apparently this is a form of extortion they use on private companies that they think have money- I'd never heard of it before either.

If true, I would move the company the fuck out of the Ukraine. Maybe Canada? I hear they have good developer incentives nowadays.

you can't just move an entire company to another country, especially from somewhere like the Ukraine. There's no way even a cool country like Canada would just let them in and start working :(

if this turns out to be a GOG.com shutting-down style prank, expect a lot of people to be pissed off GSC... for a while anyway.

Funny you say that because when I bought STALKER, I stopped playing in frustration after about one hour. But when some modder released STALKER Complete 2009, it turned into one of my favorite games.

There's no way a US developer could do it justice. They'd inevitably want to westernize it, taking half the fun right out of it.

Agreed, which is why I disagree with posters above suggesting they should move the team to the west - whatever the solution, the team needs to stay in eastern Europe, surrounded by the buildings and history they recreate and reimagine.

All they need do is publish it though. Maybe give a bit of dev support, but I bet most of the guys from the original team would still work on it if they could get a solid publishing deal.

I'd be fine with the studio being picked up by Zenimax and kept as intact as possible. It would at least give them another studio that is actually capable of making a quality product.

what dummy publisher wouldn't want to have this game on their list?

Further, buying the rights would give them the ability to make a Stalker MMOFPS.
