The Spike TV Video Game Awards took only ten minutes to get to its first big reveal. The Last of Us, the long-teased mysterious PS3 exclusive, is reminiscent of the Dead Island debut trailer, showing a family struggling against monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting. The game is being developed by Naughty Dog, the team best known for their work on the Uncharted franchise.

A girl that "sounds like Haley Joel," according to Garnett and "looks like Ellen Paige" according to Xav appears to be the game's main protagonist. See for yourself:

The PlayStation.Blog has been updated with the game's premise:

The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind. Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find. Joel, a ruthless survivor, and Ellie, a brave young teenage girl who is wise beyond her years, must work together to survive their journey across what remains of the United States.

Naughty Dog is definitely out front in human characterization... already curious about how it'll pan out. hopefully it's not just another zombie game, although it's already implied there'll be more story than most of those games put together!

That was my thought as well. Though the concept seems a little stale the game looks great and I think Naughty Dog will do a good job. Hopefully they focus the game on survival and limited resources ala survival horror games, miss those :(

I just finished Uncharted 2 and one of the main problems with that game was the "characterisation".

The animation is extremely good, but, the artwork they created to serve that animation is deeply flawed. They stacked so much extraneous shader bullshit on the faces that the "humanity" of the characters was significantly lost. Most importantly the eyes, which have so much shadowing and glow/shine/reflection bullshit on them that they lose their whites completely. This is especially egregious on the brunette protagonist, who most of the time just has monkey eyes, with no whites at all.

And very often everyone has weird, plasticy sweat, unfleshy flesh colour (though this is not nearly as bad as it was in Uncharted 1, where they had full on Doom 3 going) and so on.

For that reason Valve, not Naughty Dog is out front in human movement and motion, because they make none of those mistakes and as a result have the most readable characters in games.

the eyes are better in uc3, I think, though I didn't try a direct comparison

Looked great, but I'm so tired of all the infected/zombie games. How about ninjas or pirates? Those haven't been in the loop for a while now.

Yeah, which are also Day of the Dead Remake zombies and various other "infected" in games, movies and so on. 28 Days Later zombies are basically THE modern zombies.

The more I watch it and think about it. I am not so sure how excited I am for naughty dog to jump on the "zombie" band wagon.

Also I will bet $20 that Ellen Paige is at least the face model of that girl.

Even if it is zombies, its decidedly more a different take on the gameplay, where these are not just wimpy, weak creatures that only should be feared in numbers, but even alone can be dangerous.

But the trailer implies its more deranged humans than anything else (eg like BioShock's splicers).
