There's no time more lonely, confusing and woeful than Valentine's Day, and next year's will be especially so. English indie thechineseroom announced today that Dear Esther, the commercial revamp of the acclaimed melancholy mod, will be released on that fateful day, priced at $9.99.

"We are finishing off Steam integration and you can expect to see a page arrive on Steam in the very near future, including system specifications and a shiny new trailer," thechineseroom adds.

Dear Esther is... best explained by thechineseroom: "Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of the island, of who you are and why you are here. Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience." You see? It's lovely.

The description reminds me a lot of Myst. Which is good. There hasn't been a Myst-like game since, well, Myst.

there have been literally dozens if not hundreds of myst-like games since myst..you must not have grown up in the 90s and lived in pc game stores like i did.

Haha, seriously. I'd love another must style game if it realized why people loved it and built on that (the exploration) instead of just doing another game with bullshit puzzles.

holy crap! i never even knew there was a Myst V..and it was created by Cyan Worlds themselves, not outsourced, and it's in real time 3d..I sort of gave up on them after Uru, why didn't this get more publicity?
How come it isn't on Steam?

man i am seriously bummed out. I totally would have gotten Myst V when it came out to support that team, but ubisoft did a shit job polluting the market with Uru releases that I think I just assumed V was Uru repackaged YET AGAIN with more crap.

The game isn't available streaming anywhere, and still costs $50, seven years later..i mean that's Apogee/3dRealms rape dollars for nostalgia.

A Valentine's Day release seems rather appropriate.
