Nintendo is claiming new sales records for two of its recent holiday launches. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, seen by many as Wii's swan song, has sold 535,000 units since its launch one week ago, making it "the fastest-selling Zelda game ever" according to NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Super Mario 3D Land also performed well for the publisher, with Nintendo claiming it the "fastest selling portable Mario game in company history," selling more than 500,000 units since its launch two weeks ago.

For comparison purposes, the last big console Zelda release, Twilight Princess, managed to push 454,000 units in its first week. That game went on to sell over six million units, so these initial sales figures may bode well for Link's latest outing.

Mario 3D Land has also significantly bolstered 3DS' sales position this holiday, proving that hardware can be sold so long as people are interested in the software offered. Hardware sales tripled during the week of Super Mario 3D Land's debut, according to Nintendo. Nintendo's next big 3DS release, Mario Kart 7, has Fils-Aime understandably excited about the platform's continued momentum. "What this has been able to do is drive our Nintendo 3DS business in only eight months to surpass the full first year volume of the original DS and we still have the bulk of the holiday to go," Fils-Aime told USA Today (via Eurogamer), "and we still have the launch of Mario Kart 7 to continue driving our full-year sales on Nintendo 3DS."
