Though the NPD Group decided long ago to keep data from its monthly sales numbers secret from the general public, some specific sales information for October's heavy hitters were revealed in the company's monthly research email.

According to the report, the DICE-developed shooter Battlefield 3 sold "just under" two million units between its October 25 launch and October 29, the final day in the company's October data tracking. Batman: Arkham City, from developer Rocksteady, pushed "over 1.5 million" units after its launch on October 18.

Id Software's Rage reportedly sold 550,000 across its three platforms between October 4 and October 29. These numbers, of course, do not account for all avenues of video game purchasing--specifically, digital distribution is not factored in. Assumption is that both Rage and Battlefield, games from developers with a strong legacy in the PC space, had strong digital sales.

According to internal EA estimates, for example, Battlefield 3 had sold five million units within one week of its launch. In contrast, Activision has claimed its latest Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 3, has an "estimated sell-through" of 6.5 million units in the US and UK.

“Between Uncharted 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, and Zelda: Skyward Sword, I expect November to be a huge month for new physical retail sales," NPD analyst Anita Frazier added.

That's a pretty pitiful showing for Rage.

Considering ID hasn't made anything good in 10+ years, I say it's not too bad.

Grats on BF and Batman tho, both fantastic games.

I'm not really surprised, the majority of the market dont know id or care about their lineage, combine that with a launch that at least appeared to neglect their core audience and you have a recipe for disappointment.

I am tired of seeing reports containing notes like "specifically, digital distribution is not factored in". Personally I haven't bought any game as boxed version since nearly 4 years. Some games sell over a million in digital sales and are not even being mentioned by NPD or similar statistics.

These statistics are based on around 30-60% of sales depending on the title which is similar to putting a hand on one of your eyes while trying to solve a puzzle. It just doesn't make sense.

Not much more they can do with Valve withholding the info.

I completely agree, its just nonsensical data like this, maybe that is what Valve is pursuing, to weaken the significance of such sales statistics. Still they should work something out, like this they could just let it be with the sales statistics.

Valve are pretty open about sale statistics of their own releases, gabe often talks about it. I think the lack of transparency with other titles is down to the relative publishers demanding that stuff remain private.

The developer/publisher can release the numbers if they want.

I don't think its anything to be alarmed about. I'm not a fan of rage but I remember seeing the first week world sales and it seemed to do really well. I'm guessing these are US only figures? I'm not sure though

Are these US only figures? Because from what i've read rage sold over 500k in the first week alone worldwide.

Yes, US only. Rage did okay, but not 7 years of development okay. I think they learned this lesson before they even released as Carmack was going on about how they can't be taking this long to release games anymore.

Yeah, it seemed like Carmack considered the Rage project a failure even though the engine was pretty good in the end. IIRC his plan was to freeze the content development process; I would think that between that and retaining the entire art crew they should be able to kick the next game out a lot cheaper if they can keep it managed. If they can kick out the next game in 2013 and some DLC for Rage as well maybe they'll be able to cover the last seven years. I hope so anyway, cuz there's no way Rage is going to do it alone.

Didn't they say recently that development on Doom4 had been temporarily halted to reevaluate things after the rage launch? I dont see them managing a 2013 release if thats the case. Honestly i think id are in a pretty bad position right now.

Previously id remarked about how hands off bethesda had been during development of rage, i think thats going to change.

I think that was an untrue rumor. Doom 4 is still going on as planned. The dev process should be much quicker since they don't have to spend any time tinkering with the tech. Hopefully carmack will give PC users love this time around, since the PC has pretty much far surpassed consoles power wise.

It sounds like they froze the content development process slightly too early.

Uhh, 1.5 million sales in the US alone is a huge number, its probably one of the best selling releases of the year with that. And of course i'm sure it sold well elsewhere too.
