Battlefield 3 launches with 3 million pre-orders

Battlefield 3 launches today with roughly three million pre-orders already secured, marking a strong launch for EA's attempt to tackle the Call of Duty franchise.

Battlefield 3 is launching today across all platforms, and already EA is popping the champagne. The game has racked up roughly three million pre-orders, guaranteeing an impressive start for its sales figures. But, even with the impressive feat, the game will have to work all the harder to catch up with Call of Duty's mean sales record.

EA posted the pre-order news yesterday, claiming it's the biggest FPS launch in the company's history. The beta also set the company bar, topping its social online play record with nine million testers.

It's an impressive achievement, but worth keeping in mind that Call of Duty: Black Ops sold roughly 5.6 million on launch day. While predictions show that Modern Warfare 3 will easily top the sales figures of Battlefield 3, it's unlikely EA is going to complain about the millions of dollars it will be banking on DICE's shooter.

Can't say that I'm impressed.. this game has let me down quite a bit so far including my time involved in the BETA ;( Visually I give it credit, but the lack of FPS on the console is garbage. 30FPS really????

Well, there's always MW3 and thats not saying much.

The game would of looked like utter crap on consoles if they had gone for 60fps vs 30fps.

Haha what? COD aside, 30 FPS has been the industry standard for mainstream FPS console games - if you care that much about FPS (as I do), simply buy the proper version of the game (PC).

Did you know that great graphics and FPS are directly related? True story. You typically have to make a tradeoff between them, especially when developing for a 5 year old console.

There is a reason CoD runs at 60fps, because it doesn't even compare visually.

I'm not sure what you expected from the console version. The hardware in them is garbage, its a miracle that the game runs at all.

It's been shitloads of fun so far. Problem though, my mumble basically turns off while i'm in game, and works fine when i'm at the desktop. I have the voice settings in the lower right of battlelog disabled / muted, but that doesn't change anything. Anyone else run into this problem?

One thing you may try. Go to Control Panel --- Sound --- Playback (tab) select your current headset/speakers and hit properties. Select Advanced (tab) and remove exclusive control. Do the same for your Microphone as well. Hopefully that will fix your problem, I have no other ideas.

You could've just purchased it in a retail store if you wanted to show that you didn't want the profits to go to Origin. I think that would work.

I've said this, numerous times. Those people are boycotting BF3 because they 'don't want to support Origin', since BF3 comes with and requires Origin.

If you mention Half-Life 2, they either have no response or say that 'Steam was never this bad!'. Shows a clear lack of a functioning memory.

Steam was more useful. (It could patch games when it came out).
Both of them are pretty fast.
Origin unlocks games much faster (Steam still has to hitch and do a decryption, Origin doesn't even bother encrypting it).

There's definitely room for improvement on both sides. There's no reason/need to boycott using Origin.

Haven't used Origin yet, but thinking about it when I get BF3. BUT... Origin doesn't patch games like steam?? What a stupid move if so.

Gonna need it for ME3 anyways so.. fuck it. Now it's up to EA to make this shitty program into something better. Just.. copy everything from Steam, and I would be happy.

The more you use it, the more you realize there is absolutely space in the market for two distribution platforms like Steam and Origin. Bonus win for the consumer in the form of price competition down the line.

Isn't there some statistic that like either only %40 or %60 of pre-orders actually translate into sales? Some are never picked up or the cash is moved to other games or some such.

I didn't think I would be, but I've been really impressed with the Battlelog. Choosing servers is as fast as my browser can render and don't even have to bother with Origin after the install. Much better than having to load a client, sit through stupid intro cinematics I can't skip, wait for the slow steam server browser to come up, then finally launch the real game engine and have to wait for it to load again. Now I'm sitting at work comparing my (bad) stats against everybody on a laptop without Origin installed.

Every DLC pack they release is going to be easy money for the rest of the life of this game. Even without mod support, this game will be played intensely for the next 2-3 years and will still probably have a very healthy community at the 4-5 year mark.

      http://www.destructoid.com/battlefield-3-ps3-didn-t-come-with-1943-as-promised-214591.phtml

Earlier in the year, Electronic Arts said (via Sony's Jack Tretton) that Battlefield 3 on the PS3 would ship with a free copy of Battlefield 1943 -- a potentially sweet selling point for the deal-conscious gamer. Well, it wasn't until the game's launch yesterday that customers found out EA had changed the deal. There's no freebie in there.

EA said - "In lieu of 1943 being available on disk for PS3 customers, EA has made all BF3 expansions available early to PS3 customers," said the company.

So they aren't providing the free content they promised and are offering to *sell* you content early?

That's even sleazier than the Cat Woman content in Batman AC.
