PS3 firmware 3.73 now available
Miss seeing the soothing PS3 firmware installation screen? You're in luck. Sony has released yet another incremental update.
It's been nearly one month since the release of a PS3 firmware update. If you miss seeing the soothing firmware installation screen, you're in luck. Sony has released yet another incremental update. But for once, it's not mandatory.
What the update provides is, once again, incredibly vague. "Stability during use of certain PS3 format software has been improved," the patch notes. That's the same line Sony's been using for most of its incremental updates.
The last major update was 3.70, released in August, which added the Automatic Update feature.

it really does piss me off that automatic updates are only available to plus members. automatic updating should not be something you have to pay for, thats fucking stupid and arrogant and greedy. the godamn Wii does automatic updating for free, my godamn printer automatically updates the firmware for free, yet my CELL BROADBAND POWEREDTM MULTIMEDIA MACHINE requires 10 bucks a month and took like 3 years to even get to that point? come on Sony.

I don't like Microsoft as much as the next guy but I gotta give it to them, they're on top of their game when it comes to consoles. Have you tried browsing PSN store? What a clusterfuck. Looks like a high schooler should be able to come up with a better design. I can never find shit there, and browsing is a pain in the ass. The UI when you just launch your console is terrible too.

At the same time, I do like how XMB is lightweight, starts up quickly, and has a logical menu layout for getting stuff done. The menu is a little cryptic, but once you learn it, you can move almost immediately to whatever setting you want to change. I use my PS3 offline all the time (except for manually triggering game updates), so I haven't seen the PlayStation Store. If Sony could get a lot better at the firmware / game updating process, that would be awesome.
I haven't seen an XBox Dashboard screen, but Microsoft has done a major overhaul to the Dashboard at least twice (NXE in 2008, Kinect stuff in 2010), and from what I've heard, they've changed around the menu UI elements a bunch of times, sometimes making things more difficult than the previous release.
