In my situation Firefall has already stolen many hours from me by checking the forums and the gameplay and it will definately continue to do that since the release of the game will be only the beginning. They're planning on releasing lots of new stuff on the game and to support it for quite a long time.
-
-
"...from a developer helmed by a former team leader at a little outfit called Blizzard Entertainment."
I thought the main attraction was that they had developers from Dynamix who made Tribes 2... Blizzard has went through so many developers they're like a dime a dozen and equally as skilled now days.-

How is Firefall ripping off of Starcraft? For comparison: www.firefallthegame.com and http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/ (look closer at the logos)

I blame people's lack of imagination. Like, they're both sci-fi and therefore both must be along the same lines. They can't fathom anything that would be different, if nothing more than the color scheme, and backround periferal's are anything similar. It's the same reason so many people complain that JRR Tolkien = WoW, when it's not even close to true. They just see Elves, and Dwarves, and Orcs, and it must be the same. It is not.

You have to actually put out a game to have any sort of 'elite' status. Putting out another crappy expansion pack for a game that is dying out doesn't put you into a category all of it's own.
If you're talking about an employee from the 90s or maybe one that quit before 05, then sure... but I'm guessing this isn't. Blizzard now isn't what it used to be.-

Well, we're hiring...so send resumes. Web designers and developers (esp Ruby) needed badly. www.red5studios.com to apply.

:O I will when I have one! (school system is getting in the way of progress and internships, but you will hear from me later this year! :D)
Btw, Grummz, do you know how it works with international internships? I mean, are there special rules/laws/circumstances that would apply? (I'm from the Netherlands)

Right after WoW, before the lethargy took hold. That's good...
Still more interested in Tribes 2 developers. I don't believe there have been any games put out, Blizzard or otherwise, that could live up to what they did. That may change, but the last 6 years or so of consolization has proven otherwise.-
-
-
Yeah, it does look good... then again I've been looking forward to a lot of games that looked really good, then you actually play them and realize they aren't even close. Dead Island is the most recent addition to that lot as well as Space Marine.
But Space Marine at least has a fairly enjoyable gibbing element to it. It's like a combination of Gears of War and Prince of Persia.

Yes! I am too... people don't seem to realize how amazing the Tribes series was or how far it was ahead of it's time. Blizzard games now all adhere to a basic formula that doesn't change at all and it's getting quite stale, just like consolization.
Tribes was in a league all it's own and even Planetside tried copying it, but failed.

I spent some time talking with one of the devs for awhile during PAX East. Got some videos up:

I cannot wait to get a beta invite and for this game to come out. -
Firefall is a very good game that has been in productionf or quite soem time, witht he use of the morphene engine for natural motion and the heavily modified Offset engine, and with great potential it makes wonder how far Red 5 will take the game to in form of gameplay and expansions, this could the "IT" when ti comes to reborn F2P as they mention in the trailer from pax.
-
-
Had the pleasure of playing the game at PAX East and PAX Prime this year and it was an awesome experience for both pvp and pve. I believe that what will strengthen the game further than its already solid gameplay is the connection the development team has with the community. Great stuff, Red 5, keep rocking!
-
Firefall certainly does seem to be shaping up to be a decent game. Although the PVE seems a bit small for my MMO tastes, this is one of the few shooters where I'm legitimately interested in the PVP. I hate to admit it, but I can be a bit of an angry beaver when I lose. Fortunately, the actual gameplay seems to be fun enough for me to get over my petty kindergarten RAGE. I WAS looking forward to Diablo 3 PVP, but the Real Money Auction House sealed the deal for me not buying that game. I'm guessing all the non-greedy Blizzard employees ended up in Red 5.
-
Thanks for the very informative article!
The Firefall community really is great, and no I'm not trying to brag. :p So if you want to join the community, stop on by the forums at firefallthegame.com!
Not only do you get a chance to get in the BETA, but you can also meet other community members.
And the game really is shaping up to be something great. It's amazing how much of an improvement there was from what they showed at PAX 2010 to what they showed at 2011. -
-
I spent 60% of my PAX East time at the FireFall booth. These guys are not only the coolest game design company around, they also have a team that has some amazing credentials, most notably; tribes 2! I really hope anyone that reads this article becomes as interested in FireFall as the rest of its community. Don't forget to signup on their forums and leave some feedback!

In my opinion, this game should win free to play game of the year, whether it be this year or next. If Red 5 can deliver on their promises and the game lives up to the hype, it really will change how people look at free 2 play games. Here's hoping that Red 5 sets the bar high for the future of free 2 play.
I'm so excited for this game, and can't wait to log in for the first time. -
The best part about this game is that they will be adding more battleframes (classes) and new content as we push back the evil and wicked MELDING! I'm also hoping eventually we will be able to play as the Chosen temporarily, or even as some of the bigger monsters out in the world they created.
I can't wait to see what the High end tournament style gameplay will look like. I followed League of Legends quite a bit, and would really like to see how a shooter does things. I think Red5 Studios are the guys to do it. -
As it stands I'm somewhat iffy on Firefall. Tribes: Ascend took a lot of my interest back in March, and I pretty much let Firefal slip off the radar. However, the more I hear about Tribes the more appealing Firefall looks. While the competitive multiplayer doesn't look too attractive, the open-world aspect could be amazing. Definitely looking forward to giving it a shot.
And hey, can't beat the price (free). I just hope they balance the game around actual gameplay and not maximum profits. -
Such an amazing game. Beta invites already sent, I can't wait to start playing. Firefall is really something new for the gaming world, I truly hope they manage to make it as big as its potential to be. Frankly, with Red5 in charge, I don't even have the slightest doubt it will thrive soon after its release. What the developers there are doing regarding the community's role in building the game is really outstanding, I didn't even know it could exist. I can already see it becoming game of the year.
- X-Tor -
I have been following Firefall ever since a friend on a forum posted about it right after PAX Prime last year and I have to say this is the only game I have really been looking forward ever since. There aren't many games that I get excited about as much as I am excited about Firefall. One of the best things is that the devs seem to want to make this the best game for us as they can unlike a lot of online games out there that are just care the money. Sure Red 5 wants to make money but they want us to be spending money on a great game that we want to spend money on. A lot of F2P games are making it so you HAVE to buy things or you wont be able to keep up with the people that are buying stuff. Red 5 is making this skill based not "I pay this amount of money and get a I win button". This is one of the things I think a lot of people will like and it will bring more people to it.
-
If you liked Borderlands but felt like it missed the mark in so many development opportunities then this is definitely the upcoming game to have. Imagine if borderlands had an open world with hundreds of players instead of small 4 player servers... then imagine if it had a world with dynamic events and not reskinned areas with different "story quests"... then imagine true PvP and a Clan type system and you would probably have 40% of the awesome that is Firefall.
Firefall is truly trying to break through all the complacency in the gaming industry; want proof? Firefall will be completely free to play, no paying for characters, weapons, areas, content, nothing. They want you to enjoy the game so much that you will support it through their cosmetic/convenience cash shop. There is no pay to win. They are trying to EARN your money instead of just blindly saying "Gimme" like the rest of the industry. It is truly Free2Play Reborn.
I know I'm not the only person that has been looking for an awesome Online Shooter with an open world, so I say to my fellow gamers who have waited for such a game... the wait is almost over. -
-
To be honest Firefall has a couple of thing that will attract a lot of players
1. MMOFPS : not many of this kind ATM ( or not a good one at the moment)
2. E-sport : they are planing to make Firefall and E-sport
3. New graphic engine : not unreal engine
4 ITS FREEEEEEEE!!!
You can play with all your friends and dont have to pay a cent. NO monthly bill. No more headaches , just install it and kick your friends 4$$!-
Can't forget about the dynamic world, with important dynamic events.
A very cool variety of enemies you will encounter that seem to have VERY good AI mechanics.
You can also start up an 'Army' and choose your designated symbol and colors for the group.
And the fact that content will be distributed as long as the players continue to push back the enemies in the game world. Which in my opinion, is fantastic.
-
-
FireFall looks like it will be an amazing game, and loads of fun to play. Whats stands out for me though is the people at Red 5 who are behind the magic. Everything I have experienced as a member of the community paints a picture of a company that has fresh idea's and a willingness to listen to their community as well. Everyone from the CEO all the down take the time to interact with us and seem to have as much passion for the game as its community.
-
-
Firefall is definitely my number one game this year. With a large open world to explore and explode, there's plenty of action when I'm looking for PvE [Got to love a good bug hunt]. And if I want some competitive PvP gaming, I can have that, too. The gameplay looks solid and fun, and I can't wait for December.
-
-
-
-
I'm curious how well PvP and PvE will mesh for experience and character advancement. Pricing for microtransactions is another thing I wonder about. Still it looks interesting and I think will fill a niche in the MMO crowd, even as an admitted squad-based FPS by the devs. Guess we will find out in the next few months.
-
-
-
No doubt about that, they wouldn't put "Free2Play Reborn" as their motto for no reason. :p
This will truly put some healthy competition in the F2P market, which is good over all. But it still baffles me how such a high quality game will be 100% free, even the content that will be pushed out won't need to be paid for.
-
-
Firefall is currently my most wanted game. I think it's the blend of story-driven, cooperative, open-world PvE and competitive, skill-based, team-based PvP all in one free game that appeals to me the most. Glad to see more websites posting information about this amazing-looking game. I just wish I could have gone to PAX and gotten to play it early.
-
-
-
Beard! Yes! We must have beards. Big beards. I suppose small beards would be alright, too. But only in addition to the big ones. I'm talkin' ZZ Top Beards. Also, it would be funny as hell to have a frame that shows off a big fat gut. Y'know, since there are always armors that show plenty of midriff-region skin for the girls.

I have only seen one preview video for this game so far, and I already cannot wait to get my hands on it. Granted, that one preview was from Angry Joe, and I'll buy any game he recommends, but I digress.
Firefall is a refreshing change from any MMO I've seen to date. Futuristic, skill-based, no auto attack (thank you god!!!! -cries tears of happiness), and it's a shooter. I'm also thrilled to see dynamic world events like invasions of actual in game towns by an alien race known as the Chosen, with actual lasting consequences should you fail to repulse them. I am praying on my knees for more dynamic events like this, and I fully expect Red 5 to deliver. Firefall will turn me into a sleep-deprived soulless zombie. And I will embrace it. -
Played at Pax 2011 and totally lived up to what I was hoping for after early announcements. I'm looking for something that rewards any skill I might have with FPS games, keeps me coming back for more with persistent world elements and has all kinds of tweaks and spec choices with the battleframes and loadouts. On top of that there appears to be kick ass 'alien threat' encounters that bring the whole server together to fight off threats. They look far more real than the crap they threw together for WoW. PvP has everything you hope for out of the classic FPS with the benefits of other game elements added in. PvE is sure to be kickass with large encounters.
And free to play? C'mon. They saw my whole checklist and ticked it all off.
now they just need to release this! -
Really love what i've seen so far, i've been looking for something like this and now i finally found it!
The pve and pvp seems to be exactly what i've hoped for in a game
Of course the F2P makes it even better, will probably even use the microtransaction if I get into the game.
Really like the sound of being able to dynamically change " classes" as you go, ensuring you don't simply get in a rut of doing the same thing over and over again.
Can't wait till December now! -

Never before have I encountered a studio that listens so intently, loves its own game so dearly, and knows the development/launching/designing steps so darn well all together. What's more, your team truly gets the idea that a game like this is not a product, it is also a service that demands heaps and heaps of polish even after its launch (perhaps even more).
On another note, I would like to quote a paragraph from Jeff Strain, one of the co-founders of ArenaNet. I believe the idea behind this message is crucial, and perhaps more so given Red5's pristine willingness to listen:
"Finally, you can make everyone happy, but you can't make everyone happy all the time. It is risky to try to make decisions that appeal to all players equally. Don't fall into the trap of making decisions based on what causes the least amount of pain, because this can lead to a game that is just kind of "okay" and doesn't really excite anybody. When you have a large, active, and passionate player base, every decision you make, every change to the game, no matter how convinced you are that it makes the game strictly better, will piss someone off, and they'll post about it, blog about it, rant to the press about it, loudly and publicly predict that this is the "beginning of the end" of your game, and send hate mail to your community and support teams. MMO developers have to have thick skins, but always remember that if one of your players is angry with you, it is because he really cares about the game, and that's much healthier for you than apathy. Go with your instincts and make the right decision for your game."
A lot of things are going right in my eyes, and I wish you the very best in both commercial and gameplay success.
For folks in the forum, here's the original link. Love his message.

This game is going to be wonderful for a number of reasons! To begin with it takes the elements that one experiences from a real time, user skill based shooter game with full freedom of momvent. ( backwards, forwards, left, right , up, down). It then adds in a persistent world that you can grow your character in while changing the face of the world. (which can be likened to MMOs in some ways). However they did not just stop there.
Nope... they then had to go wrap it up in a very nifty scifi story with help from authors including Orson Scott Card.
Now to wait for it to come out >.-
-
-
Well he himself did not write it, rather he is acting as a "reference" to the fiction of the world. His daughter is actually the one dealing with most of the fiction/backstory.
The reason why some people were upset is because apparently he is anti-homosexual? So some people where going about making a bit stink about that. As a result people just tore into his books, skills as a writer.
In other cases it just seems that people did not like him as a writer. In my opinion, I've personally enjoyed his books. So I suppose it's all a matter of opinion. However, if you want to get a "taste" of the story so far you can go look at the back history for the game on the web page and see what you think of it.-
When I first read about the backstory of firefall, about how aliens were invading earth from rocks that fell from the sky and civilization being destroyed, the article mentioned Orson Scott Card as having a part in writing it.
I actually had a brainfart and thought it said "Orson Wells," assuming it was a joke on the similarity of the plot to war of the worlds.
I eventually figured out that the hilarious article wasn't actually trying to make a joke at all. D:
Oh well, I did take the effort to poke around and the backstory is pretty complex, and fairly interesting, it will leave lots of room for interesting plots in the future.

Currently in beta Firefall's massive world and many aspects of both PVP and PVE elements seem to cater to all players. Offering both 3rd and 1st person shooting views both old school shooter fans and those new to the game will find themselves quickly at home in this game. I know I for one am looking forward to it.

There are actually five battleframes planned for release! But only four are out so far. Eventually they plan to release more, which will give people something to do, as you can level every class on a single character by switching battleframes.
This is something that is really missing from Global Agenda, which I tried to play recently, but I'm not willing to go through the tedious tutorial, much less leveling to see if I like another class.
I have been following the game intently since pax, and am eagerly awaiting the increase in beta size. I imagine it should come shortly, as their initial wave was small and unlikely to really stress the game all that much, given how many times it's been shown off. Thats my opinion, at least. -
It's hard to find a good online game nowadays. Not just the game itself, but the community and developers are included within that critique. FireFall has an amazing concept, and a similarly amazing team to back the game up.
Can't wait to play this game, and I hope anyone reading this will give it a try as well. -
-
I've always wanted to play a true shooter in an open persistent world. Like TF2 or Battlefield mixed with WoW or EQ. There really haven't been many games to grab my attention in this genre, but I'm happy to say that Firefall has finally done that. PvP, PvE, Dynamic Quests, Vehicles it really has it all. From watching the videos, you can tell that combat is the main feature and not just some tacked on gimmick thrown into a traditional MMO engine. It has substance and as a stand alone FPS would be solid. Throw in the extra MMO elements and you have so much potential. Throw on top of that F2P with no pay to win microstransaction shop, there is no reason not to give this game a go.
-
Hello this is "King" and i would like to share with you the joys of Firefall.
1. Its Free
2. With something as amazing as Freedom, that gives you the money to buy your Wife or Husband something nice and tell them "Baby, i love you... now lets play some Firefall"
3. The calibur of this game is that of a $60 + $15/mo Game, except, its Free.
4. Also great class based Action Shooter MMO qualities in an awsome world created by Red5.
Wtth somethign this amazing, this Fun, This Free, you have NOTHING to loose so try it.-

Personally i loved the assault because of the weapon i found during pax.. My secondary fire changed to "multi-shot" that was 3 rapid fire plasma blasts instead of the shotgun like alt fire you started with. Also it was blessed with 20% reload speed, and had an empty slot (required rank 6 to use, which took a bit to get to over the weekend at pax) so i put another 20% reload in the slot and was bombarding huge areas with explosive blasts all over the place.. and oh yeah, the shots bounced off walls! :P

I've been watching this game since the reveal, and its just been getting better and better as time goes on. I highly recommend anyone who can go sign up on their website, www.firefallthegame.com
The forums are quite nice and you can chat with the devs if you need questions answered, they are quite helpful and nice. As it is, Firefall already has the first and most important part of a massed multiplayer game, the community. And by all means the gameplay looks like it will/is great.
The downside is, im spending so much time focusing on it when I cant even play it yet, that I might as well be playing it for the time its taking, oh well, such is the nature of me and things that I really cant wait for :)-
I highly recomend you watch this if you want to know what the pvp looks like, and also like laughing.

I just can't wait for this game. I think one of the coolest things about it is how they plan to expand the game world; Instead of having "expansion packs" that suddenly give you access to a bunch of new areas, players in Firefall will have to work together in PvE to push back the Melding storm and allow travel to new places.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
I don't believe so pushing back the melding is more like building giant crystite powered generators that make a shield of sorts that push back the melding. However, I'm not a developer I have no clue if the Chosen can attack these generators causing the melding to reclaim an area. Although I see some issues from the game play aspect like having players who were in the area when they logged off only to come back to be insta killed by the melding.
-

The great thing about battleframes is that you can change them on-the-fly in the cities, and in PvP spawn areas.
All you do is go to the designated area, and a interface pops up that lets you swap between the 4 current announced battleframes which are Assault, Recon, Medic, and Engineer.
The good thing about this is that you are NOT bound to one class/battleframe throughout the game, you can gear up each battleframe to your specifications and still switch them out if you want to play as something different.
So this creates a very dynamic play style, aside from the fact it's 100% a team based shooter.

Nice preview about a great game. I love how the devs are so active on the forums and on the irc, play LoL with us etc, it makes me feel even more that this game will be pure awesome. It's quite unbelievable to see this kind of game to be released for absolutely free without being pay 2 win! After reading about this game and watching footage about this since january I can say that this game doesn't just seem like the best free to play, this seems to beat all the 60 dollar games easily.
-
yea. firefall might be the game a lot of people are waiting for. it combines my favorite genre, the shooter, with my favorite game mechanics, like the persistent open world.
i think the persistence is a very important factor of that game.
looking forward playing it. and, wtf, it is free 2 play! what else do you need to know? :) -
This game is going to absolutely rock my world. The Red 5 team is far from the money-driven corporations that I, as a gamer, am now used to dealing with. These guys are passionate about what they're creating, and I can't wait to see all of their hard work pay off. Help support this game by following it, and telling your friends! Many of us have been waiting for something like this.

I really, desperately hope it stays in Red5's control. As long as it does and it stays Free 2 Play without Pay 2 Win or velvet ropes, this game is literally going to springboard into major stardom over the coming two years. Call of Duty fanboys, disillusioned Tribes Ascend fans, and bored WoW players will be flocking to Firefall in droves.
-
-
Firefall appears to be something I can get into. It's got PvP for when I feel like blasting friends but with a PvE world to explore on the off-time complete with raids to defend against and lands to reveal. On top of it all it's free to play which is awesome on a Uni student budget! Can't wait to get into it and apparently neither can the Devs, who stick their noses into the forums as often as the players.
It will probably steal a lot of my own hours too. -
-
-
I was talking to one of my friends about firefall today and one thing that really stuck out is that while firefall seems to have only a moderate amount of PVE content compared to most other mmos it really shines in having the absolute highest quality and most replayable dynamic events that beat out anything else around. Combo that up with the solid PVP team battles and this game will keep you playing until the wee hours of the night wanting more.
-
The goal for launch is Fun over content. I think that they are on the right track as most game companies try to push out as much mid to low level content as they can to overwhelm the player with sheer mass of information.
If Red5 delivers on their goals and aspirations not only will this game shape up to be one of the biggest open world games to date, yet that content will be dynamically under assault by the Chosen and their allies as we struggle to liberate earth from the clutches of the melding.... In the beginning there was Firefall, and we looked upon it and knew it was good.
-
-
Firefall lookis really amazing. I really like the fact that players can push back the melding to open more playable areas, and I also like the fact that the devs are really involved in the community. In most other games you can never speak to the devs on the forums. I also got some of my other irl friends excited about this game when I showed them some videos :p
The dynamic events look nice too, can't wait to kill some chosen :p -
-
Firefall looks amazing! Clearly one of the most polished games out there, and I'm not talking about F2P games exclusively. I've been following it for a year now, and I can't wait to get my hands on it!
I think it's the first F2P game that will make me want to pay for an in-game item.
That's how they get you, man. They guilt-trip you into buying stuff from the in-game store because this game is too good to be played for free. Their plan worked. -
-
-
-
THis is my most looked forward to game this year as well, there are many games out there but none with as many unique features as this one, I mean think about it: free to play, open world PVE and PVP, unique look, really awesome developers who stay down here on our level and ACTUALLY LISTEN TO US!- do you know how rare that is? All in all firefall looks like it has the whole package!
-
-
I am a gamer who is incredibly disenfranchised with the state of the industry. Firefall seems to be the last chance for a unique game to breathe fresh air into a industry as staid as the movie industry. Sequels after sequels and reboots and expansions, we need something new. Firefall will succeed in the MMOFPS where several other games have failed. We need it. So give this game a chance, it's free ffs.
-
-
Guys what do you think about a future open world PvP? That's actually one of the features I'm most hyped about, and it has already been confirmed by the devs (we don't know when, but we know it's going to happen). Firefall will have an open size of about 2.5 square miles at game release, but it will grow significantly over time (4 times that size is already designed and ready to be reconquered by the players, but there is much more to come in the future). We don't have any details about it yet, but I'm sure the devs will find a great excuse to include that open world PvP in Firefall's story at some stage.
Also... dungeons/instances have been confirmed as well. We don't know when, but keep in mind WHO is the lead designer here (remember WoW? those vanilla instances?), so I'm also very excited to know how are they going to deal and implement dungeons in Firefall. It's probably much more difficult in a shooter than in a pure MMO, but I'm sure they'll do an excellent job!
So, what do you guys think about those two "partly unannounced" features? How do you imagine the game could feel with them?-
Open world PVP is something you have to be very careful about especially since this game has no factions. Basically if you make it that anyone can just shoot anyone at any time it would be kind of crazy no one would be able to quest everyone would be recons hiding in some obscure location in the mountains sniping every poor person who happened to walk in their field of vision.

This game is going to rock the WWW, the sounds looks good, the graphics are awesome and the community is great, only nice people. This game rocks my fanatsy, I can't sleep, because I think all the time to FIREFALL.
PS: I love the RED5 Members http://www.firefallthegame.com/community -
-
This is an exciting idea! I have also seen that the developers are taking game ideas from the community, letting the community guide and shape elements of the game to a degree, and in some instances allowing community ideas to become game changing with the addition of their Community Voice forums where community members and Devs can toss around ideas and everyone in the community can vote on those ideas. In all Red 5 studios is taking the development process right to the players. Most of the content is in house yet they are not blind or def to the community at large.

Been playing games since I was a little kid (started with atari then the NES) and I've never been more excited for a game. I've logged over 1000 hours on team fortress 2 and love that game, but I have the feeling as soon as this comes out, I won't be looking back.
Also a giant fan of rpg's, got to love it'll be free to play, skill-based... so many things I'm looking forward to in this game.
This will be my go to game for years to come. -
-
-
Played it at PAX. The game play was unbelievable. It was fast, but not too fast that all the new guys got wrecked. Everything felt smooth and fluid. It felt VERY polished. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay long at PAX so I never got a chance to actually talk to a Dev, but I hear they talked to almost everyone.

I really think this game is the one all shooter fans have been waiting for, not just this year, but for their whole gaming lives, open world and skill based... so glad that its red5 developing it aswell, check out their forums: www.firefallthegame.com/community and you can see how active the dev team are, and that they respond to their 'soon-to-be' customers. i just cant wait for its release.

*News Flash* There's still a good chance to get into beta for Firefall. There's two chances in fact. First and foremost you gotta sign up at the game's site and you can get in by just doing that. Also, Red5 is giving testers already in invites to give out. So, if you're cool with people you get a second chance to get in. Firefall is multi-facetted in the sense that if you like to compete to be the best of the best in pvp you'll get your chance. If you want to pve in an open world it has that. Regardless of what you participate in Firefall is a skill based shooter. Meaning, however good your aim is will determine how good your character is. No luck of the dice or random number generator. Shack News gave a good article here and it only gives a broad description. You gotta see it in action. Hope to see you on the forums!

Being a helpful and awesome contributor to the Firefall community also increases your chances of being selected for the Beta. But you have to signup first at www.firefallthegame.com

GaryWolf here :) (For some reason, I got some strange hash as a username?)
Played the PvP of this game at Gamescom, was very, very fun! Finally a support class that feels rewarding!
Also, can't wait to see all the PvE content :O Crashing down a thumper, holding off enemies and seeing it take off with a belly full of crystite... It's satisfying to just think about it!

I'm going to have to agree with you, the art style is AMAZING. :D
Here's an image showcasing a rather beautiful area in the game: http://www.firefallthegame.com//assets/images/media/screenshots/1314227885-4e5586ad8483f.png
Looks superb.. -
get out of my head!
I am ready to see how this game develops over time, with the pedigree of people working at Red5 I have no doubt that this game will be the game that sneaks up and takes the "big names" by storm this year and goes roaring into 2012. The f2p model is also interesting with the quality, most f2p games i just ignore because they just are not worth it but, Firefall is a diamond in the rough.
-
-
I think the most awesome part about Firefall is that they're making something somewhat new, instead of World of Warcraft in space. And they're putting in jet packs. And hats. I only hope that their is some sort of system in place to stop cheating people from making a million accounts and ruining it for everyone. WoW had the pay-barrier, we'll see what Firefall comes up with.
-
My name is leonleo1 in firefall forums. I believe firefall could be more successsful than world of warcraft simply because it offers a new dynamic that hasn't really been seen before. First of all is a open world online shooter, that in itself makes it a unique game. It offers major world events as described above and this is all that has been said before release! think of what we will get to do once it releases! I have been watching this game for over a year now and must say it is mounting up to be one of the best games this year and hopefully will continue to grow to be the most popular games on the internet. Long Live Firefall!!!!!!

Great point. I like the fact that quests are pushed to you so you do not waist time wondering around the area hunting down ? marks and ! marks all the time. There are many things about this game that are never before seen and run of the mill, yet the proper blend is what amazes me the most. It makes playing Firefall fun and entertaining.
This type of seamless world experience helps to immerse you in the world and never leave you hanging as action rolls your way as you explore, fight major wars or just sit back and hang out with your friends playing e-sports for a while.
-
Wow, long time reader and fan of news blogs and such and it has been a long time since I have seen so much enthusiasm over a game! I took a few hours to brows the Firefall website and even joined the community forums and discovered that Firefall is shaping up to be more than just another game you play. I feel that this will be something you can invest your time in and not only be rewarded with fun and entertainment yet also hook into a solid and friendly community.
Firefall is also not just a FPS and you are not forced to play e-sports 24 hours a day to get gear and such. Firefall offers a lateral and vertical progression in PVE open world content much like traditional MMO's. You will not see any ? marks or ! marking out missions as each dynamic world event and local missions are pushed to you via the SIN network (Shared Intelligence Netork). So the pace of the game can be as fast or as slow as you want it to be.
Another amazing fact Xav de Matos may not have known with his hands on play is that Orson Scott Card is writing with the Firefall team to generate back story and future game content overall. The game world is under constant conflict between us and the Chosen. Covered in the Melding are new areas of play that await courageous players and armies who manage to push back the melding and recover the lost land in the war... yet war looms on the horizon.
The Chosen are constantly attempting to take back the land that was uncovered and they will if the players fail to repel Chosen invasions in each town or key point on the map... Epic... this game scraped Epic off it's boot along the long climb to where it is going now... there are few words to describe what this game is and will become. A true work of art.-
Allow me to say welcome to the community, and if you want some live updates, talk to the community and some devs then I recommend you to join our IRC-channel #Firefall on globalgamers.net.

FireFall will be an awesome game, I have been following it since September of 2010. I have said this numerous times before (one more couldn;t hurt) that FireFall will be the League of Legends of the PC FPS realm. Not BF3 not MW3, those will be forgotten as the next game of the franchise comes out.
Being Free 2 Play and having a presistent world, it forces the developers to release new content, as well as maintain the most interesting gameplay, otherwise they will not survive. After playing this game at PAX East I can tell you that the developer, Red 5 is in this game for the long haul. This to me is more valuable than any B2P AAA franchise title that will just be replaced 12 months later.
Anyone reading this, I assure you that FireFall will impress, and not disappoint. -
The moment I saw Firefall in action, I could tell that it would be full of adrenaline pumping eye candy. Dynamic content in major hubs, the ability to swap out roles at will, harvesting that does not seem boring in the least, and good ol' PvP action: Firefall seems to promise a good time, with little downtime between events.
Honestly, I may have a hard time deciding between playing this game and Guild Wars 2 in the upcoming months. So much video game goodness, so little time...-
I can feel you with the GW2 split, yet add SW:TOR as I am defiantly playing each in the coming months. I feel that the best element FF has to offer is that it is F2P and they do not sell "Pay to win" items in the store.
Once I get a solid fix of my anticipated P2P games I can relax and take in Firefall as much or as little time as I like as I do not feel compelled to play the game as I am not paying for it. Noting like feeling you enjoying a game and not showing up for work ;) -
there is no comparison for me. Firefall being free is like... what makes me focus on it so much. I am all for this sort of spending, because you don't have to drop 60 on it all at once, and test to see if the game is good. I can see if the game is good, then give my money to it, at my own pace. I spent 200 bucks on League of Legends because it was good.

Lots of booths at PAX were pretty bad that way. Borderlands 2's wait was over 6 hours! Last year Portal2 and Duek Nukem Forever also had 4+ hour waits. Personally, I hate waiting in line, so the much shorter line at Firefall was nice (and may have contributed to it being the only big title that I really spent much time playing).

Since it has been so quiet lately on the FPS scene, this gaming was a welcome fresh wind. Got linked to the game via a blog on LoL, but this game blew my mind. Astonishing graphics, skill based shooter (very important for me atm, so tired of press button a, hope for good damage) and best of all, free to play with no power for money.
So got pretty interested into the game, got to be a pretty involved into the community, helped out some threads, wrote a guide, but still love reading about the game, talking about it with other community members etc. It's another big perk of this game, the community is pretty awesome and making friends is easy in it and gives you big advantages (waaaay bigger chance of beta for one :D).
Got some hands-on time at GamesCom on the game, loved every second of it, can't wait to get my hands on more of the game and see the final release!-
The community is so good over there. I want to invite all well-intended, good natured people over there. though... for you trolls... you know who you are... well... No Troll's allowed. And don't think because I put an apostrophe there on Troll's, that it means that there is room for one. That position is filled... by me... so no you can't join!

I agree when I first heard it was free to play I was hooked, and that was a long time ago, the persistant world will offer alot to players, everytime we log in something awesome will be going on some where, I also heard we can jump servers freely which def. out does WoW, I mean comeone paying $20 to play with your friends one another server is outrageous when you already $

I was really looking forward to playing Tribes:Ascend at PAX but was disappointed to find that you can buy wins through your load-outs (which you can earn through play too, which is why they call it "free-to-play"). Not cool. Still, it has speed of movement that FF lacks, since FF is more of a tactical shooter.

Tribes ascend was very good. But many of the abilities were pretty standard fare for the genre. The class structure lacked customization. You basicly had to hope they had a class that fit your preferences....but usually it was just mostly to your liking.
Id rather move a little slower than loose all of the other stuff that Firefall provides.
Not to mention the open world aspect....no comparison.

Even though I haven't gotten my hands on it yet, the gameplay footage alone gives me the impression that the extra work is going to pay off. Switching freely like that is an option rarely seen in the shooter genre, and it's just one more reason why FireFall looks like it's worth the attention of every PC shooter fan out there.

Just kind of pointing this out so people wont be expecting something else even tho firefall will have a massive open world it is small compared to traditional mmos when first released it will be 2.5 square miles and will eventually span 10 square miles http://www.firefallthegame.com/community/threads/a-true-massive-open-world.9146/page-3#post-312645 (for reference)

I hope we get to see how many people are playing what in Firefall. I'll be focusing on PvE but after playing PvP at PAX, I think it'll be pretty fun too, as long as they get more gametypes in like CTF and Bounty Hunter (fallen players drop a skull, other players collect them and turn them in at the enemy's base). I REALLY want to see a Dreadnaught-style gametype too, where teams try to take down the others' capital ship.
With as many players that Firefall supports, I'm hoping multi-team gametypes will finally hit the mainstream. -
I think it will be a mixed bag because this game looks appealing to both. Me personally am more of a PvE player so the dynamic events and scenic vistas are amazing to me. But there is also things like competitive style class based PvP to appeal to the other side of the market. The devs are designing this with both in mind so neither will be lacking in content :D

While Firefall's first released version is going to limit PvP to instanced 15vs15 matches, the developer is looking at including an open world PvP game mode down the line. Considering their engine supports hundreds of players on their PvE zone, I'm actually quite excited.
If any Spanish users are reading this, remember there's a fansite at www.firefall.es . -
Firefall, looks real impressive. I like the look of the game style, animations and characters.
Doing a team warfare with an MMO and FPS combo, just can't be beat.
This is the game that I have been waiting for. I have a group of friends that are going to get wild when Firefall comes out. And I think that they are going make the free to play thing work with out messing up the mechanics and fairness to the players.
Cheers

I wanted to share one of the things that really hooked me on this game (other than the awesome game-play, graphics etc.) Red 5 has spent some serious time developing a real story with a interesting an immersive history that, as an avid sci-fi reader, really drew me in and helped "flesh out" the wolrd I will be playing in. Check out the 12 days of Firefall here: http://www.firefallthegame.com/home#story
-
I agree, what little we know about the Firefall story is anough to get me hooked, the idea of Orson Scott Card (writer of Ender's Game) helping write the games background and story makes me giggle with excitement. I believe the sotry will captivate and entertain all who run across it. All Hail FireFall!!!!!!

Well, several games try to boast "dynamic content", like RIFT, but their dynamic content quickly becomes very repetitive because its not actually dynamic, and the only thing random about the content was when it happened. The locations of rifts and invasions was nearly identical each time. I wouldn't really call that "dynamic".
Dynamic means anytime, anywhere. Not "anytime after X time has passed since the last event, anywhere we program as a possible location."

Firefall is definitely my most anticipated game of the year. The way Red 5 is developing the game by listening to its fanbase promises to make it a great game. I have faith that Red 5's Firefall will quickly become a gamer favorite, combining the PVE of MMO's with the shooter aspect of many favorite other games. It will not dissapoint!

I played this game at Pax Prime a few weeks ago and its amazing! The PvP is very enjoyable and I love how easy it is to swap between classes. The PvE was surprisingly very fun too. I come from the WoW (and other MMO's) experience and this to me was something different. The fact its skill based and not just a right click auto attack was really engaging for me and I loved it. I've been looking for a new MMO or something of the sort to play and I have found it, that is once its available in December. Till then I wait eagerly and hope that I may be one of the lucky ones to get into the beta.
Also the enthusiasm for this game was very apparent on all of the employees at Pax and is also demonstrated on their forums. They seem to really be community based and I love that. -

And I still want to know 1) If its possible to land a thumper on top of the ship, and 2) What would happen if you did land a thumper on top of the ship?
I mean, seriously, how hilarious would it be if the ships coming in cloaked, and a thumper comes flying in on a ballistic trajectory and just slams into the top of this ship, sending it crashing to the ground?
Make it happen! -

There was one time that I was the only one in a turret and just laid down the law when the shields were down, and then manhandled the Chosen while the shields were up. Because of the Assaults firing up, we took the dropship down :D It was glorious
The Chosen ARE hard though, and you guys already said the dropship will have MUCH higher HP in the "real" game, so I think we're good thanks! ;) -
We managed to destroy it once when I was playing, and that was when the group really seemed to be working together.
The other times were just people running around doing their own thing, and we only got it to about one third health. The time when it got destroyed was later in PAX. I wonder if people were getting better... -

Interesting news that is related to this great article is that Red 5 has announced that a 5th battle frame will be revealed near the launch of Firefall this November or December. Many of the community members have been battling over what this frame could be... there are secrets to it's identity hidden all over the man Firefall website and within the Tweets, and Dev posts! Come join the Community and help solve the crisis of the secret 5th Battle frame at Firefallthegame.com

When I first heard of FireFall I was sad because I didn't think I would be able to afford another game with school and holidays coming around, I was shocked when I heard that the game is 100% free to play and download. This is my number one most anticipated game and after spending some time with the community I can only see great things happening with this game. If you aren't keeping a close eye on FireFall you are doing it wrong.

I must admit I'm terrible at aiming. Some years ago I used to play Halo with/against my friends, and i got destroyed every time. When we played CS, i could barely where my deaths were coming from. I think that's what kept me away from FPS. But RPGs are my thing. Sadly, now we're not as much in touch as we were (different cities, different degrees, etc), and i have decided that this game will help me bring me back into the FPS. And how better could it be, than to do it in company of my friends? I spreaded the word among them, and now we are all waiting for this awesome game to be launched. And i don't mind being bad at aiming. I'm sure that practicing will make me better, and my friends and i will surely enjoy the time, be it destroying those annoying Chosen or mutually exploding our heads.
RPG, FPS, friends, jetpacks, and all that for free? What else could anyone ask for?-
We've focused a lot on delivering a range of classes to provide an opportunity for lower "twitch" players (like yourself) opportunities to contribute really strongly to your team. While all of the classes provide bonuses for strong aiming skills, with the support classes like Medic and Engineer you can be effective without the crazy snap shooting skills with the right loadout of abilities and battleframe modules. If we've done it right, the aiming skills are rewarded, but everyone can have fun and contribute to the team's success.

I could see a tank type battle frame, a guy loaded up with far more armor than an assault class to the point that its absurd. The question is how to make such a guy intimidating and balanced at the same time. Maybe slap a monstrous cannon on him, that fire's aoe shells with effects in them, which also drains his energy reserves.
Hmm, that would be kind of neat to see.

Firefall is what i have been waiting for for a long time. A shooter with the best aspects of team work along with the RPG elements that make for a long great experience. Best yet is several different types of PVP so you can try your skills against others in several different scenario's. Firefall looks to has the best of all shooters that i like to play today all rolled into one.

For all the doubters: Firefalls micro-transactions don't provide power! They are mostly of cosmetical nature, meaning, that you can buy a smashing mustache, but no better weapons or gear that would create an unfair advantage against other players.
Skill is still the #1 requirement to win in this game -
-
I am so excited that Firefall is coming in December!
I got a chance to play it at PAX Prime 2011 in Seattle and still can't believe that it will be free to play. The quality of the game, the gorgeous environments, the well-thought-out battleframes, the smooth gameplay, the freedom of movement from jumpjets... it's just an amazing game!
From what I've read on the game's forums, it's roughly 50% PvE and 50% PvP. You can form armies and do missions together with your real life friends or go into PvP combat in a variety of game modes. Firefall offers a persistent world with persistent characters that level up in a "horizontal progression" kind of way, but you only have to make one character because they level up each battleframe (aka class) independently. So, one day you can heal as a medic. The next day you could snipe or go assault if you want. All the while, you are leveling up each of those "classes", but you can change your battleframe at any battleframe station whenever you want.
Another element I am really excited about is that it is not pay to win. The game will have a ton of micro transaction little doodads to buy for your character to make them look cooler, etc. but nothing that will affect gameplay or DPS or where your character can go in the game. There's no velvet ropes.
I believe Firefall is going to cause a major shift in PC gaming over the next two years because pretty much all of the alternative shooters will look pretty pale in comparison to everything Firefall is bringing to the table. -

After finding the trailer for this game a year ago, on some random MMO site, I silently followed the forums, blog posts, and twitter feeds. Now the game is in CBT and is very close to release, and the hype has only built. I can only hope that I get into one of the Beta phases, but I can wait the short period of time until December. This game takes many of the successful elements of other games, and then injects them with steroids, Sci-Fi, PvE, PvP, 'Armies', Dynamic events, you name it. This game is going to be great.
-
-
Been watching this game for awhile now, hoping it'll be awesome, then got a chance to play at PAX and it was awesome! Each frame (class) feels unique, and it plays extremely smoothly. I got a chance to play a ton of Recon (sniper), did plenty of Assault, and tried a bit of the Engineer for base defense (the turrets are very helpful in those enclosed spaces). I played it all through PAX, so I'm scared to think what it'll do when it gets released and I can play it without waiting in line.
With the price tag at 0, why wouldn't you try it? I, however, ill probably end up spending eight thousand dollars on mustaches, character skins, and exp boosts. I'm very glad Red 5 is adamantly against "paying to win" and I fully support this business model. -
I have been following Firefall since Sep 4, 2010 and have been impressed with how the game has progressed since they first released a video on it. I have the rare honor of holding a Codebreaker title on their forums for a PAX event that they had. They handed out badges to people with QR Codes for people to crack and it them we found a website that we had to decode with the badges. It's little events showing the people at Firefall want to bring us a game where we can work together for the benefit of the players.
The world events are looking cool and I am looking forward to hearing more about them in the future. I've played a few other games with world events and it really adds to the feel of the game when you can take part in helping defend ground that you hold.
With it being F2P it's going to open the opportunity for a lot of people to try out Firefall and see if it's something they would have fun spending time in. Now with some F2P games it ends up being pay2win and Firefall has said from the start it's not going to be that way with them. It's going to be a skill based setup, so the people that don't have the option to get items in the shop don't get walked all over by the people that can.
Overall I'm really excited with what I have seen so far and I'm looking forward to more info in the future.-

Thanks Funk. I'm fine with a nifty forum title, didn't even expect something like that though. I had a lot of fun working with the community while we were all trying to figure it out. I think the Firefall team was a little taken back by how fast we were able to crack the code and get into the back side. Had to wait a few months or so for them to come out with the second stage of it and was well impressed. Was a very well put together mp3 with a military unit investigating The Melding when it first arrived.
From what I've seen they haven't done anything half way, it's always done with the intent to impress and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Ever since I stumbled onto Firefall from MMORPG a couple of days ago I've been stunned by what I have seen. It only took one video of gameplay footage to wow me (which is rare, so well done on that). I've been advocating and trying to spread the word to all my steam friend and gaming clan with an almost religious determination. Based on all the videos and information I've read from the main site I hold high expectations for the game. It even sparked a long discussion about whether or not it would turn out to be another disappointment like like Dead Island(opinion) or become one of the greats like TF2, Mass Effect series, etc. It's my personal hope that it does live up to my expectations and exceed it. If the Dev support turns out to be strong, for example continuous content updates and bug squashing fists of justice, I would probably triple my word of mouth endeavor to the four corners of the globe. That kind of support would mean that the game is a labor of love for Red 5 and that would mean I've found a game I could finally, comfortably, settle into playing exclusively and content that is genuinely supported by the Devs for a very long time(hopefully in terms of years to come).
-
Come to the forums over and you can see how strong the dev influence is in the game. And how much they believe in it :D

Well, hopefully that's a result of our trying to build a kick-ass shooter, *first*. Then we were happy with the feel of just running around jetting and shooting each other, we started adding all the cool "MMORPG" stuff (persistence, progression, etc) that will hopefully keep us all engaged and having fun for years...

I played with the Assault frame at PAX rather extensively. Trust me, it's effective.. everywhere. Most HP of all of them with some huge abilities. It's a heavy AoE weapon (with Crator, plasma rifle, and alt modes). The other frames are more specialized and precise. Assault flattens indiscriminately.
-
From my experience at PAX: The assault has a big plasma launcher that does AoE damage, so they're great against hordes. Recon relies a little more on his secondary weapon (which could be a grenade launcher or SMG), but can cluster enemies up and then plant mines/explosive charges at their feet by using abilities. Sniper rifles are still good against the big lumbering targets.

Ok, Firefall is a shooter .... with an open world as an MMO, knowing that the game is not named as an mmo ... and the best .... IS FREE. Firefall is a game almost perfect ... but why almost perfect? ... simply because they do not consider how you will be the ping you have to play ... that could ruin the game of foreign players, a simple view of mine. All I can say ... for now ... but whenever possible try this game I'm sure there will be more to say.
red5, thank you for creating this masterpiece. : P
sorry for my english xd-
-
-
I'm also curious about the 250ms ping thing.
On an aside, having run an ESWC qualifying event, I've had "pro" gamers complaining about 10ms ping on my network, claiming that it was effecting their game. After some troubleshooting, I determined that it wasn't my network that was causing them to ping so high.
So even if their is some compensation, there might be something of a psychological effect to the perceived quality given a higher ping.

The more I read about this game, the more excited I get. I loved Tribes for years, and I have been yearning to play a game that can deliver like it did. Between the story of Firefall, and the extremely promising gameplay, I'm expecting an incredibely fun game to play. Like check out www.firefallthegame.com to learn more about it.
-
Yea the vertical aspect has been missing from many of the new games and that really hurts. But in firefall there are jetpacks that bring back that nice vertical fighting that i really like. And im glad finally there is a good shooter coming out that isnt even trying to be realistic, thats a huge bonus, realism keeps ruining good gameplay so much lately.

I played this game at PAX Prime 2011, and it was definitely the highlight of the show.
My impression of the game was that it was TF2 style gameplay, slowed down to be more like tribes, with tribes jetpacks, all thrown into a Guild Wars style MMO environment, with Invasions that beat out what Rift can deliver.
Seeing as it's going to be free to play, EVERYONE should play this game, at least to try it out. -

This game looks amazing. It really is going to revolutionize the way free to play games are considered.
I should also mention how great the community for this game is. I mean, really...just go check out the forums sometime, look at how awesome the people are! Not to mention, the devs are always active in the forums and answering questions whenever they can. Can't wait to play! -
I think the most important thing that this game has to offer is the dev team. Why? Because they listen they talk with the community, and the most important part they intend to be players of their own game, until now I can't see why this game wouldn't be the one of the most popular games out there. just hope they will release a soundtrack or something like that =P
-
-
The amount of interaction the Devs have with the community I haven't seen before, normally used to the other companies having forum reps trickling info from what they hear but otherwise just keeping the peace. But, on that note I agree with Holdur, I want to hear some music, game looks good! but does it 'sound' good, even if I will probably lay some heavy metal stuff during missions :P
-
-
Agreed, I've been in a few pre-release forums for games, and the devs in this one are by far the most interactive with their future players. Definitely give off a really good friendly vibe too. Oh and a soundtrack release would be awesome. From what I've heard of it so far in the vids, I'd happilly pay for it.

This is most definitely my most anticipated game this year! I can't wait for this, not only is this looking to be a great open world fps where so many others have fallen short but they're also wanting to focus on making it an esport which means its going to be a great shooter, one thing that I've always felt other open world fps's lacked. And the best part is it's free with a shop that doesn't completely control how good you are at the game! This game has something for every kind of player, and there's pretty much no reason why anyone shouldn't at least try it.
-
Red 5 has tried to max out all their ideas with this game, having developed it for years in total secrecy, and they're now thoroughly testing features to make sure they're tweaked for optimal fun. PvP, PvE, dynamic missions, open persistent world, original graphics, story, music, etc. in one coherent game. Grummz' original idea was to make 'yet another nazi-zombie' game - glad he didn't! :-)

Firefall is shaping up to be a very impressive game, but what I love most about it is Red 5's attitude towards making the game, and communicating with its community.
A fair number of the developers ranging from humble UI programmers to the CEO of the company itself regularly post on the forums and talk with their fans, showing how much they really care about their community and what it has to say, even going as far to say as adding new features to the game if that's what the community want, portraying to their fan base that they are some really friendly people.
Hope for them to succeed in the future, so we can see more of their great sense of friendliness.
Side Note:
Two good videos demonstrating both the quality of the game and of the dev's attitude can be found here, showing of the PvP in a co-commentated video with TotalBiscuit and the lead class designer, David Williams.

Fun is subjective by nature. We just ask one questions: How much fun did you have on a scale of 1-10. We strive for a 9 or 10. If we get a score below that, we ask why it wasn't higher and what would make it a 9 or 10 for them. Each iteration, we try to improve by one or two points until we get it right.

I'm so Excited about this When I first heard about Global Agenda I Hawk Eyed that games Progress but was disappointed by it's shortcoming PVE world Although Now they have the Sandstorm DLC it still isen't for the higher level people Which is why Firefall's Open World Makes me Giggle in joy lol
Props to Red 5 for a amazing job so far -
-
I know Grummz answered your question but just to be specific, Red5 has said over and over again that they want their game to be skill based first and foremost and not sell power (pay2win) I could see justification for them to do this if the game goes into financial crisis but ultimately the most profitable cash shops (i.e. league of legends) doesn't sell power and is still a very enjoyable game. Also if they sold power they would remove the e-sports component of the game which would be foolish in my opinion.
-
yea, i am well informed about that. but i just saw a very interesting presentation about battlefield heroes. they sell power there and they are very successful.
to make it clear... i am not a fan of that. but taking the competetive argument is a bit off. the comp scene is a very very small portion of the overall userbase. IF you dont have an income, you have to change your business model to apeal the masses. its sad but i rather have some power items in the game than no game at all.
-
-
Some things about Firefall:
Online Shooter, totally free to play, no selling power
Open world co-op with hundreds of players in PvE environment
10 Square miles, 2.5 in December, players unlock content by "pushing back" the Melding storms
Story background by Orson Scott Card
Competitive e-Sports PvP maps with automated ranking, tournaments
Build in clan support, Name your clan, give it a symbol, compete with each other
Dynamic missions and strong resources model to create loot
Customize everything: guns, backpack power plants, armor
Warpaint system for custom colors -

Maybe not at first, but don't sell yourself short. I've played many FPS and the biggest problem I see is replayablilty. Main story is usally played once or twice, and multiplayer moves to the "newest release". I dont think anyone plays the original COD anymore for example. Maybe I just have high hopes.
-
-
-
I really hope that you guys can get the progressive storyline integrated well, within the game itself. The way that Eve Online (my last mmo) did it left them with some really big gaps, and the player really didn't feel like they had an affect on it. They've taken measures for that in the last couple years, but it still feels more or less like an afterthought.

Cod and Battlefied series both are quite different from firefall. At the moment there is large gap in the fps game pool. There really aint really good game that offers character developement in a shooter. There are few ok games that fit in this genre but the breaktrough game has not arrived yet. And with recent marjor succes of games like LoL ppl have gotten used to the free to play model. Maybe firefall fills that gap. I certainly hope so :)

I know the question wasn't directed at me, but I'd really like to see how some of the Army stuff works in-game. Warpaint options, symbol design, tech tree, whatever... It's all very exciting.
I think even a simple video of someone just playing around with some of the Army customization stuff would be really cool, and help people get an idea of how they want to start designing stuff for theirs once they get into the game.

Firefall looks amazing, Red5 did an great job at PAX and it seems Firefall is finally being noticed. I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time, blew me away to find out its all for free. Can't wait to explore the open world, jetpack travel seems very fluid. I love the borderlands...esk graphics, I think they nailed it by removing hard black lines and adding more colour, the optional third person view to see your surrounding is useful too.

On the note of the map, I was wondering, will future expansion literally be us expanding the area by pushing back the melding, or opening new areas by finding pockets in it. As I find the latter to be a good way for instancing things like raids on chosen or hive nests in the future. Firefall looks awesome but I have yet to know how it will perform in the longer term when your at end game pve. And raids out into the melding just seem like they would be awesome, you could through this get a great variety of areas, from old underground research labs to forests to crumbling skyscrapers, you can really go anywhere you want.

There is no other game I am more excited about than this one. And the best part is....it's free!!! :-) Going to buy a new 'puter to run this baby right!! (It's past time anyway)

Paralleling beauty and gameplay, Firefall is by far the most intriguing game I've been anticipating since I first came across the Spore announcement. Coupling highly fluid mobility and customizable weapon tactics this game is the epitome of skill based shooters. I have been dreaming of this game for so long and here it comes. Wrapped up in a pretty little toon shader'esk package, taunting us with its vibrant environments and actually engrossing and immersive story; which is rare for shooters these days. I can speak for myself when I say I am AMPED for this game to release!

I've been looking forward to Firefall since last years PAX Prime, and went to PAX East in Boston in March just so I could get a chance to play it (300 miles round trip? totally worth it, just to meet the awesome dev team) And the way that red5 handles themselves proves again and again that they really should be considered as more than just another f2p title. I know that they'll be completely redefining the gaming industry with Firefall, and I can't wait ^_^
-
I had a chance to play at PAX in one of the PVP encounters. It's a little like TF2 and a little like MNC (Monday Night Combat). The invasion scenario I had a chance to watch on a very very very large screen and it looked just as enjoyable.
Provided they keep the Free 2 Play balance good and follow valve's model it should be pretty awesome. I'm particularly interested in the potential Planetside like potential which they have said is completely achievable with the engine if the interest is there.
Updates and content will also follow the rolling release model of TF2 so new features and content should be in continual push rather then one big DLC dump.
Don't sign up for beta... I don't need the competition for the beta keys ;) -

Can't say I've ever fallen for any game like I have for firefall :D truly wildfire, catching everything in its reading inferno of epic win. I'm building my own replica battlframes, and was sad to see no open positions for a3D game artist :( but I'll be having them keep my resume on file!
Excellent article! The game deserves evey bit of exposure we, fighting the good fight for bored, poor gamers everywhere can lend it.
Keep up the good work Red5 team....RED TEAM GO!

I quit playing MMO's some time ago, this title has me excited about gaming again! Since I found out about it last April, I've been drooling over it and waiting. The Frame system seems exciting and I'm especially excited about the 24/7 continuous world. The free to play model has my attention, but the feel and scope of the game are the things I'm anxious for. Also, Orson Scott Card writing up the story specifics for the game, BIG WIN. I can't wait to see the manga that goes with this game !
