Electronic Arts has revealed that the release date for its anticipated MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is "definitely tied" to data the company receives from ongoing beta testing.

"We're driving toward a date," EA's Frank Gibeau said in a recent interview. "But the very issue you raised is why we're not announcing a date yet because you want to make sure that these services can last a decade."

"We don't want to happen to us what happened to WoW and a couple of other services where in the first week there were queues trying to get on to the servers, the entire service crashed--we don't want that to happen," Gibeau told CVG, referencing technical issues that occurred when Blizzard launched World of Warcraft in 2004.

A "great launch" is essential, Gibeau says, noting that decisions on where to focus game polish comes from the feedback provided by testers.

"The other thing is, the technology of standing these things up and then getting all the server farms to work together, talk to one another, store character records... it's extraordinarily complex and so we want a very stable experience."

Gibeau says that EA is "totally focused" on quality, "so whatever the beta test tells us is what will be the determining variable on when we will hit."

Every video they release makes me want to try it less and less.

I'm in the beta and I'm enjoying the game but there is on thing I don't like. I know how in past republic games, you are constantly making decissions that will affect the game. However, sitting and listening to NPC's talk for a few mins before starting the actual quest is good for lore but a lot of quests (if not all) are like that. Sometimes I like to read a brief description of the quest and move on my way at a fast rate.

You can turn subtitles on and read / skip through those conversations faster than they can talk. Or better yet- ignore them altogether and just skip through to the end, accept the quest, and the brief description will be in your quest log if you want that.

It's pretty neat first having everything voiced though, even the lowliest of side quests, but eventually listening to the same stupid problems from a bunch of incompetent NPCs at each new quest hub gets to be annoying. At first they sort of stagger them better so as to make them more unique and interesting, but as the game goes on and you need more XP to level you get overloaded with listening to a bunch of NPCs before going out into the zone, if you are a completionist anyway.

I'm not and eventually I started focusing on my class quests and turning down or flat out ignoring a lot of side stuff. Problem is, some of the side missions can be lengthy chains and quite fun with interesting conversational stuff so you might miss out playing that way.

At the latest once you've levelled one char to max level you will be skipping all those dialogues and won't care any more about voice over.

I enjoy all the VO's my BH is at 30, and I started a Sith Warrior. One thing about WOW, is that I did skip reading all the quests just to get to my next goal, and after 6years of playing i couldn't tell you much about the lore. I hate reading a wall of text, but with the VO's I can sit back and watch a little story, with choices to get me involved in them. I guess if you want to race to 50 you can disable cutscenes in the pref. Just remember all you testers to /bug when you find something, that's the point of being a tester.

I'm in the beta but haven't had a chance to really sink my teeth in yet. Can't wait to give it a whirl.

I get in on the 2nd. I think I'm gonna play an Imperial Agent. Can anyone give me a tiny bit of info on the Operative and/or sniper? I cant find gameplay of them anywhere. Thanks.

Well Bioware, I'd really like to help you with that beta but... looks at empty inbox

I hear ya, I sat there trying to get the beta application form to submit way back when they original asked for beta testers and never did get accepted. I have even beta tested probably 6 or 7 major titles (including SWG, lol)

Oh Bioware, why do you forsake me so?

I even tried sending them a note that said "I really like you, do you like me too? and had boxes for yes/no/maybe" but they just lit it on fire and laughed as they asked me for money.

MMO:s that have had a perfect launch have tanked hard and there are games that were terribad and buggy at launch that did very well.

Thats a very large generalization. RIFT is doing quite good and had one of the smoothest launches I can remember. After changing to F2P Age of Conan is doing fine as well and they had a mediocre launch with many issues and were able to recover. Warhammer Online had a decent launch and tanked badly.

The problem with SW:TOR I have is it doesn't seem to bring anything really new to the MMORPG. I've played WoW for four years, and I loved it. I don't want to just do that again, but with Star Wars added in.

supposedly, their big bulletpoint is a central story.. which ffxi had. But this time, it is fully voiced. EQ2 was mostly voiced at launch, but no real central plot in the game. Outside that, yeah, I don't see it.
