In its announcement of the 3DS "Ambassador Program," Nintendo included a mysterious line that pointed to "updated versions" of classic games coming in the future.

Today, Nintendo outlined what that means, revealing that additional features would be added to the classic NES titles in an update some time after their release on the 3DS eShop.

According to a report from IGN, the upcoming crop of NES titles will be updated with "additional features such as multiplayer simultaneous play." Other features were not mentioned, but Nintendo was quick to note that adding 3D to classic games is not in the plans. "These will be 2D games. They are not 3D Classics," Nintendo said.

Users that enroll in Nintendo's "Ambassador Program," otherwise known as those that purchased a Nintendo 3DS prior to the hardware's upcoming price-cut, are still slated to get access to the list of games before they are released on the eShop. As stated in the original press release, the updated versions of the classic games will be made available to Ambassadors for free.

The list of announced NES titles include Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, and The Legend of Zelda. Five more, unannounced titles are planned for the program. Ten Game Boy Advance games will follow before the end of 2011.
