Alleged PS Vita RAM reduction downplayed by Sony studio partner

Novarama, one of Sony's exclusive studio partners, has commented on an alleged RAM cut for the PlayStaion Vita, claiming that the (still unconfirmed) drop won't have negative impact on the studios' projects.

While not officially confirmed by Sony, the grapevine is abuzz with rumors that the upcoming PlayStation Vita portable gaming device will ship with less RAM than was first noted in the initial device spec sent to developers.

One developer, the recently made Sony-exclusive Novarama, appears to have confirmed the rumor in a recent interview, as the company's CEO of PSP games downplayed the RAM reduction.

In an interview with Develop, Novarama CEO of PSP games Dani Sánchez-Crespo, "appeared to confirm" Vita's RAM drop, but said he's not concerned about it having a negative impact on his studio's projects.

Though exact RAM specifications have not been revealed publicly, initial speculation was in the neighborhood of 512MB. In May, the rumor was that Sony had halved the system's RAM to 256MB; however, it's very much worth noting that Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida's response to such claims was: "Do not believe everything you read on the Internet."

Sánchez-Crespo also praised the PlayStation Vita's battery life as "fantastic," and seemed to both confirm the RAM reduction and shrug off it's impact, saying "It's actually good for developers to work under constraint. Generally for Vita, we still have a whole lot of headroom in terms of GPU power, CPU power and indeed RAM." Even with the alleged cut, he claimed that developers still have more than ten times the amount of RAM that they had to work with when developing PSP titles.

That said, Novarama isn't focused on PlayStation Vita development just yet, and are currently working on Invizimals 3 for the PSP. It's a bit ironic, but makes sense given that early Vita adopters will likely be core gamers--not exactly Invizimals' target audience.

      10 times the RAM? 256MB isn't bigger than 32MB X10 at 320MB. the PSP SLIM had 64MB of ram. I'm pretty sure the Go had 64 or 128MB as well.

      I dunno man. Unless it stays 512, this isn't adding up. GET IT?!?

        it's all hearsay at this point and nothing to worry about. all you need to know is that it's ~10x more than the PSP.

        Pssst. 256 + 128 = 384.
        Also, saying "it's actually good for developers to work under constraints" is totally misleading. I wouldn't disagree with the statement, but it's total bullshit in the context in which he frames it.
