Minecraft creator discusses Xbox 360 port, Kinect functionality

Although the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft is largely based on the original PC game, Notch admits that it is "a new product... designed to work better on a console and to focus on the types of experiences you expect when playing games on a console."

Markus Persson, better known as "Notch" to his followers, recently chatted with IGN about the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Minecraft--"actual game title not decided yet." Yes, although the Xbox 360 version of the game is largely based on the original PC game, Notch admits that it is "a new product... designed to work better on a console and to focus on the types of experiences you expect when playing games on a console."

So, how will the console version of the game differ from the original? "The crafting needs to be done completely different. The current type of crafting with a game controller would be about as fun as name-entry is." If crafting drastically changes, no wonder Minecraft's title on Xbox 360 would need an adjustment. Perhaps one that reflects the game's silly Kinect implementation? "I'm trying very hard to make sure we have a setting you can turn on that turns the game into what everyone is joking about; you wave your arms around to mine and use items. It's just too silly not to include. Punching trees from the comfort of your living room has never been this immersive before."

Minecraft's move to console is a surprise, even for Notch, as he admits "if I had intended for Minecraft to end up on consoles, I wouldn't have developed the game in Java. The decision to port the game to consoles came from a combination of player requests, a desire to play around with the brand on different platforms." In addition to a console release, Minecraft is also coming to mobile phones via the Xperia Play. After the release of the Xbox 360 release, is it possible to see another console version--perhaps on Wii U or PlayStation 3? Notch admits he can't say anything, but noted that "almost all of the big companies talked to us."

A key feature that will be maintained for the console version is the game's fluid approach to release. "One major point for us was for us to keep our culture and to be able to make games in the way we want to make games, where we can release games fairly early and keep iterating on them based of community feedback for a long time." So, it's safe to assume the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft will be home to many, many title updates.

Minecraft for Xbox 360 will be released this winter.

Microsoft is going to charge the fuck out of him for the testing and validation involved with each update. Wonder how long that will last.

Considering the entire game could fit within the XBLA Title Managed Storage space, he could just put it all up there and update as much as he wants.

That being said I don't think his intention is a direct port of the PC version, or keeping it up to date with the PC.

Did one of the MS guys on the Giant Bombcast for E3 say PC to 360 crossplay was happening or did I imagine that.

Considering Notch's skill level and that the 360 version will have to be massively rewritten, highly doubtful.

Known for its limitless possibilities, “Minecraft” will come to life this winter in a whole new way through the magic of Kinect and also feature cross-functionality between the PC and Xbox 360 versions.

Cross-functionality is pretty vague but there's going to be some king of cross platform thing happening.

I'm not a Notch apologist or hater, but translating this statement makes me sad.

To clarify, long periods of time between essentially untested, potentially game-breaking updates does not a culture make.

That is what minecraft is now (although there is less game-breaking stuff now). For awhile it was constant updates based on developer community interaction. That is also probably Minecraft's "golden age".

Notch said that he wanted to keep Minecraft as close to what he originally wanted it to be but did note that the Minecraft community and mods helped shape what Minecraft is today, this makes me worried about the 360 version. The 360 version is going to be a new product based on Minecraft and I doubt they'll be any community made mods for the 360, considering how mods have helped shape Minecraft I don't know if Minecraft 360 will be anywhere as good as the PC version and to be honest I doubt it will.

The 360 version will probably be a simplified standalone thing that's not of any real interest to anyone here.

I saw the demo for the Xperia play it was pretty much the Classic (free version) of Minecraft, if that's what they're offering on the 360 I'm out!

I have a feeling this is going to bomb. Their first mistake is farming out development, there's no way it's going to keep up with updates on the PC. I just think that a minecraft that doesn't have constant-updates will languish.

I think it will be successful as XBLA games go. Obviously it won't take off like the PC version.
