Nintendo has confirmed that the role-playing game classic Chrono Trigger is coming to the Virtual Console. On May 16, the Square-developed title--which originally released for the SNES in 1995--will launch on the Nintendo Wii for 800 Wii Points.

Chrono Trigger's digital debut in North America was heavily rumored, after the game was confirmed to launch on the European and Japanese Virtual Console storefronts. Gas was poured over hints of the game's release when the ESRB listed the game for Wii earlier this month.

Earlier this month, the ESRB listed the game for the PS3 and PSP, intimating that the game was headed to the PlayStation Store. With the PlayStation Network offline for an undetermined amount of time, Square Enix has not made any announcements regarding the game's PlayStation-based, digital fate.

Square Enix has confirmed to Shacknews that the game will be a direct port of the SNES version, which means it will not include the animated cutscenes added to re-releases of the game for the PSone and Nintendo DS.

Good to see, however the DS port remains the definitive version IMO.

I'm thinking the DS port is why the VC release took so long to happen.

What was different between this version and the SNES version?

The DS version has a new translation as well as the cutscenes from the PS1 port , but with out the crappy load times that version suffered. It also has two new bonus areas and an additional ending.

Excellent, might have to grab that.

The cutscenes are poorly timed and add nothing. You watch scenes twice, which ruins Crono's death if you ask me. Especially for first timers.

The new translation is also a tad strange to me

That just means they sold them all. Hopefully they'll make another batch since it sold well.
