Downloadable Mortal Kombat trilogy Kollection announced

The first three Mortal Kombats are coming to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 this summer in a $10 downloadable Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection.

In the wake of the surprisingly good new Mortal Kombat, publisher Warner Bros. announced today that the original three Mortal Kombat games are getting a downloadable re-release in "late summer" on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will offer "arcade-perfect" ports of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3--a revamped version of the third game--for $10 (800 Microsoft Points). They're being tarted up with online play, leaderboards, achievements and trophies.

"We are very excited to finally have the first three Mortal Kombat games available in one download package for long-time and new fans to play," said Mortal Kombat co-creator and NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon. "With the release of our 2011 Mortal Kombat, and its return to 2D game play, players have been asking for these classic titles and we are happy to deliver them."

If you're not happy spending only $10, though, you can cough up $129.99 for a special retro joystick bundled with a code to download the Kollection. Available in Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions exclusively from GameStop, the Mortal Kombat Klassic Fight Sticks are made by PDP, the company responsible for the celebrated Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition Fight Sticks which accompanied the new game.

Mortal Kombat 2 was previously released on the PlayStation Network and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 hit Xbox Live Arcade, but both were pulled from sale following the collapse of publisher Midway in 2009. That was when Warner Bros. stepped in to snap up the franchise and its developers.

Rumours of an original trilogy compilation were sparked back in November 2010 after a UK retailer listed, then promptly pulled, a "Mortal Kombat Arcade Compilation" for PlayStation 3.

The old games are a bit rubbish when not seen through the Vaseline-smeared lens of nostalgia, mind.

Yes! I found MK3 in a Media Play bargain bin. Such a great port; all the PC MKs were well done.

the windows version of MK3 was pretty poor, though (early Direct-X). thankfully both DOS and Windows were on the same disc

It really was. I played the living crap out of MK3DOS, i had some cheap little noname gamepad that was layed out like a 6 button genesis controller and let me tell you brother, that little gamepad launched alot of fireballs and spears. Strangely enough that gamepad came bundled with Doom 2, and it lasted me longer than it had any right too. Never used it for doom though ;)

Mortal Kombat 3 for DOS is the best Mortal Kombat game to date. I am not about to play the new one as it's not available for the PC :(

mk3.exe 666 all day long. and the 8 fighter quick tournament was REALLY great. man, those were the days. we would smoke some weed and play mk3 for hours and hours.

Okay, I know you (misguided) people don't care for MK4. But seriously, why not just throw it on there to make the kollection arcade-complete? Every arcade MK in one bundle - that'd be awesome.

My guess would be that it's because MK4 used a 3D engine, whereas the other three are 2D engine games, so it really wouldn't "match" the others. MK4 is closer to MK9 (3D engine in 2D plane) so it probably looks much "worse" than, say, the 2D sprites of MK1-3.

At the time, I loved MK4, but I guess it was just that I was in love with 3D at the time.

MK4 was hugely meh. I did play the shit out of it on PC (never did find it in the arcade), but I think by then the series just completely lost its luster.

it means your memories of the game are convolved with your feelings of nostalgia, lending to them a gentle haze which masks the truth: they are 15+ years old, featuring dated graphics and finicky controls. the haze will be wiped clean when you pay your $10 and play them again.

Quoting from a "hot news tip" to Shacknews on MK vs. DC Universe, as read on Idle Thumbs 8 by Chris Remo (at about minute 38 or so; just listen for the piano):

WHAT THE FUCK JUST FACE IT ONE OF OUR FAVORITE GAMES HAS OFFICIALLY SOLD OUT, NOT IN STORES, BUT IN RATINGS. THIS IS THE WORST GAME I HAVE BOUGHT! WHAT'S REALLY FUCKED IS SOME OF US HAVE PAID UP TO 500 DOLLARS FOR A HIFIDEF GAME CONSOLE AND THEN GAME PRODUCERS ARE GOING TO PUT OUT A TWO-BIT OVERHYPED GAMES OUT AND CHARGE US 60 BUCKS A GAME! I COULD HAVE SAVED MYSELF 560 US DOLLARS BY DIGGING OUT MY SEGA GENIUS AND THE ORIGINAL MK HAS MORE REALISTIC GRAPHICS AND MAYBE BEST FLEW WITH THE NEW ONE WHERE FUCKING WHO KICKS LIKE THAT CHEESY? PROBABLY THE PRODUCER. AND IN THAT CASE HE NEEDS TO GET HIS ASS KICKED. THE GAMEPLAY FEELS LIKE I'M PLAYING HUNGRY HUNGRY HIPPOS AND ROCK EM SOCK EM ROBOTS. THE OLD FONT LOOKS LIKE THE SAME FONT ON THE ORIGINAL APPLE COMPUTER AND ALL THE DC CHARACTERS ARE JUST OLD MK CHARACTERS! FLASH IS KUNG LAO GREEN LANTERN IS THE BLINDFOLDED FOOL, BATMAN IS CYRAX, DEATHSTROKE IS KABAL, SUPERMAN IS REPTILE. TO THE NEW CREATOR OF THIS BULLSHIT I THINK YOU SHOULD FIRE YOUR WHOLE STAFF. AND START BACK FROM THE TOP, GO BACK TO ATARI, NO WAIT BETTER YET STICK TO POGS YOU LOP OUT CHEAP OUT CHEAP ASS BASTARD I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON AN ACTION FIGURE. SINCERELY, THESE NUTS.

Completely disagree. They play as well as they ever did, and especially with regards to the running and comboing gameplay of UMK3, remains as some of the most fast paced fighting in the genre.
